Bet money that they screw up the Hobgoblin background in a few more movies.

I've also heard rumors that the movie after this one, they are planning on Venom/Carnage. That'd be cool, but again, feels rushed.

 

The Spider Man mythos has obvious 'franchise' potential.  Why rush it?

 

Hollywood has no patience.  Everything has to be "now now now".

Spider-Man and x men are half a billion box office draws. No way either sells to marvel. Fox has been killing these new x men movies though

It's just an overall bad movie. They try to fit way too many plot threads into the movie and that results in none of them becoming fully developed. The villains are pretty much all awful. Rhino is in the movie every bit of 5 minutes and when he's actually talking it's cringe worthy. It's some of the most over the top acting I've ever seen in a comic book movie. Dane Dehaan is actually really good as Harry Osbourne but after he turns into the Green Goblin things go down hill. Every actual Goblin scene there is is shown in the trailer so he becomes underutilized too.I never actually bought into him and Peter being best friends and the design of the Goblin itself is completely awful. Don't let anyone else fool you though, Harry Osbourne is the main villain of this movie. Now onto Electro,he was so bad that I can't even describe it. Yes, the actual visual effects of him were cool but the acting and writing off him was awful. He was cheesy and hammed it up the entire movie. Parts of Jamie Fox's performance really reminded me of the Joel Schumacker Batman movies.

 

 

The only saving grace the movie has are the fight scenes. Which are actually few and far between.  Besides that I couldn't recommend it at all.

That's one thing I'm pissed about. How was Harry COMPLETELY ignored in the first movie? Why didn't they at least sprinkle him in to build that relationship with Peter if they were going to reveal him as Greengoblin in this movie?

Really bums me out, because I particularly enjoyed The Amazing Spider-Man (so much that I bought it on Blu-ray, and I rarely buy any movies).

Sony cleary wants to copy the Marvel model of having a shared universe. The next film after this will reportedly be a sinister six film.

Spiderman doesn't interest me too much for some reason.  Same with a lot of superhero flicks.  I like X-Men though.

I was very excited about going to see this, to the point of going opening weekend. But CCS has introduced enough probable doubt that Im going to wait.. Too many movies have been sheer disappointments lately, seen the new Robocop? Pleh.... EvilDead reboot is the last I saw that I was excited for that did not disappoint....

reading reviews about this are not positive, in fact I'm hearing that Sony is so hell bent on creating a "Spiderman universe" that this film more or less is a setup film

Just got back from seeing it. fug the reviewers. They have no idea what they are talking about. The movie was GREAT. I loved the first one, and this one is better by far. More humor (and MUCH better execution on the part of the writers as well as Andrew Garfield. He nails it), more awesome action (it's a Spidey movie, and you can tell he is much better than he was before. He moves better, fights better. It's just better), and more emotional. Part of that last part has to do with the events of the end of the last film, but it's great. The "last" scene of the story is emotional. I ALMOST teared up. Almost. But I didn't because I'm a fuging man. They don't introduce a lot of villains and throw them at you like I was lead to believe. Electro is the villain and it's perfectly clear. They just don't DROWN you in Spider-man v Electro from start to finish, because as much as Electro is the antagonist, the character development is front and center here and what drives this particular story (and the very last scenes drive that point home). Yes, like you see in the trailers, Rhino is there. Yes, Green Goblin is there. However, their roles are MUCH smaller than the trailers and review leads you to believe. The comparisons to Spider-Man 3 are unwarranted and the only reason people would complain about that is....well, I can't think of any reason.




SPOILERS IN THIS POST. I'll try to keep it minimal and just touch on the good and bad points, but there WILL be spoilers. You have been warned.

Screw it, I'll use tags. Gonna outline the basic idea of the movie. Basically, the story and how it moves along. Oh, and I spoil how it ends, so read at your own risk (I will include a warning at the point where you might want to stop reading if you don't want to know how it ends).

OK, so the movie starts off with a flashback. It's practically the beginning of the first movie, with added details about those events and what happened after Peter got dropped off at Aunt May's house. Richard and Mary Parker are on a plane and escaping Oscorp personnel. Some stuff happens, and basically, they die. The whole airplane scene was pretty cool, visually. Good opening.

Then we see Spider-man. And he's doing what he does. Flying around, following police chases, and kicking ass. Along the way and during the chase/fight with guys stealing weapons-grade plutonium, we FINALLY see the level of humor we expect in a Spidey movie. The first movie had a good bit of Spider-man humor, but at times it just seemed "eh" when compared to the level of humor in the comics. Well, the writers stepped it up in this one. MUCH more natural humor, with visuals that help the lines and delivery. Good stuff. Had me cracking up multiple times throughout the movie. Anyway, the main guy behind the theft is Aleksei Sytsevich (comic fans know who this is, and the rest of you will by the end of the movie).

So, after this, and throughout the whole movie, we get a LOT of Peter and Gwyn. Not necessarily a bad thing, as it is important to Peter's development as a character. Though, at times, it CAN get a little annoying. However, the writers are savvy, and they throw in some humorous lines and instances during these exchanges that help keep your attention and move it along better. 

During the opening chase with Spider-man, we get introduced to Max Dillon (the character of Electro). He's an awkward guy who NOBODY likes at all (except our two great people, Gwyn and Spider-man). He's pretty much the over-the-top characterization of every nerdy scientist you can think of. He also has some serious, serious mental issues and an unhealthy relationship with Spider-man. This leads him to think very irrationally. So, during the moments just before coming Electro, he is pretty much a mess. After becoming Electro, he's angry at the world. The guy had to work on his fuging birthday while everybody else left early. So, yeah, I'd be pissed too. Then some stuff happens, Spidey tries to talk him down, almost does, and the police fug it all up. This leads to Spider-man having to be Spider-man and fight him, which leads to Electro despising Spider-man. Electro gets taken down pretty hilariously. Again, GREAT humor in this movie.

We get Harry Osborn here and I like what they did with his character. Different vibe from his character than I expected based on knowledge of the character, but I like it. Actor is OK, but at times he's just "meh". Maybe he'll grow on me in the next one. Not much to spoil here, but just know that his role is not that large and the whole purpose of having him in the film is to set-up later films and push Peter's character development. His main purpose in this particular movie (besides character development) is to free Electro from prison and become Green Goblin.

Then, Peter finds out the truth about his parents and why they left. He finds the old research and whatnot, and then leaves to (presumably) try to find a way to talk with Harry. Then poo goes down. After a little more Gwyn action, we get the big final fight. It is great. Again, humor during a fight. Done well in this movie, and it's great at the end. After Electro is defeated, you get zero rest to enjoy it. Green Goblin comes in. Nothing big. Little 5 minute fight, with Gwyn's life hanging in the balance. Throughout the movie to this point, Mr. Stacy is hallucinated by Peter, as he remembers the promise he made to him about keeping Gwyn out of his life. Well, one LAST effective hallucination came JUST before the final fight sequence with Electro. And you think "ohhh poo". Then, after Electro is dead and Gwyn is still safe and sound, you're like "yay! False fear. We're good here". And Green Goblin has to come in and just ruin that happy thought. Basically, Gwyn ends up falling to her death with Spidey JUST BARELY missing out on saving here (literally, by a few inches). The scene with Peter holding her body is just rough. Emotional ass scene.

Afterwards, we get the fallout. Peter is super depressed for 5 months after the funeral. He hasn't been Spider-man since Gwyn died. After an inspirational conversation with Aunt May and Peter listening to Gwyn's speech from graduation towards the start of the movie via flash drive (which I loved, because although you hear it early on in the movie, you forget what she said and why it mattered), Peter realizes he has to move on with life and the world needs Spider-man. Along the way here, we see that Harry is moving pieces along from inside prison for the Sinister Six, and the first cog in this machine is Rhino. He's loose on the city with nobody there to save the day. And, at the very end, after a cute scene, Spidey comes in and saves the day. Fin.

So, that's the basic idea of the movie. I left out poo on purpose. Go see the damn movie. It's worth the watch, and it was great to see in theaters (at least for me).

Finally, finally, a decent Spiderman movie. After 5 tries they finally got it right.

It would have been even better with less Andrew Garfield stuttering through overly long scenes, but it was pretty great and the Spiderman scenes themselves were..... amazing.

No weird unncecessary brooding was probably the biggest plus.
