Still loving Gettleman?

tiger7_88, didn't you only join here after we drafted Cam Newton?

Pretty ridiculous of you to go around calling a player who's meant so much to this franchise a diva left and right, when you've only been a Panthers fan for 3 years.

One of my big complaints was that the Panthers FO treated their jobs with waaaaay too much emotion and not like a business.  We are on the right course now, even if it doesn't result in another 12-4 season.  In the long run, we will have many more playoff opportunities.

So far Getts has done pretty well with the pieces he was given. Hurndog left him a nice little puzzle with some missing pieces, and Getts was all "I got dis" and put some poo together.

It's still really early on this offseason to analyze if his first offseason was a flash in the pan or not, but I think he has a plan and ultimately, that plan will be realized. Gettleman seems to be proactive in his approach to building a franchise, Hurney was reactive. Leading indicators vs lagging indicators, etc.

Personally, I fully support the "I don't intend to treat a diva differently from anyone else just because he's a diva" attitude.

That's your prerogative. But if people are honest, everyone knows that special employees that are valued more highly than others in any organization are treated "differently" than the rest.  Furthermore, I don't see Steve Smith as the quintessential diva. He's just a hard-nosed, hard working, no nonsense type of a guy.

It makes sense to discuss a player's status in the exit interview, and it's also just common human courtesy to give someone a heads-up about their situation before you discuss their situation in the media.  That should be any player.   A more seasoned GM would probably know this. And to say that he was just answering a question, or just being honest is unacceptable. A better response would have been:

"Steve Smith has been a very important part of the team, and he continues to be a part of the puzzle. Next question."

You say something while saying nothing at the same time.  That is always the best course of action when the media is throwing you tough questions.  G-man gave the reporter a gift, and fell into the mouth of the shark, hook, line and sinker.

And if you think that someone will not take into account how every player, much less 89, is treated here when they are thinking of signing with the Panthers, then you are simply naive.

Yeah you're right they're probably gonna be treated horribly I mean all the players probably hate Rivera and those lavish million dollar contracts they hand out are just flat out insulting, this locker room is probably ten times worse than Miami. That one truthful comment our GM said at the combine are definitely gonna drive away all the FAs.

I agree with all the moves, except the alienation of Smitty. Just doesn't make sense, unless he's being overdramatic of the situation (which I doubt)

Something doesn't smell right, but I'm sure Smith's future is in his hands. Not in anyone else's.

Now, who is just being silly?

He has impressed me, for the most part. I trust that he understands how to build a winning franchise and that he is steadily working towards that with each decision he makes. His tendency to make off the cuff remarks is good and bad, IMO. I know it's not his job to play patty cakes with his players but a tad bit more couth may be needed at times. I mean, Do what you gotta do, just don't be so dismissive of a legend to this organization and city.

Except he's not. It helps if you understand what you're watching.

Except he is and thank you very much I know what I am watching. You put captain on the outside you gave one of the worst corners in the league. Slide him inside and sure he is very good but he wants to be paid like a corner who can cover both. Love the since you don't agree with me then u have no idea about football mentality on here

I have to disagree with you that what Gettleman said was "dismissive".

I thought it was (1) truthful and (2) pretty innocuous.

What turned it into an issue was the media making something out of nothing with the active help of one Mr. Steve Smith.

The problem with Gettleman so far has been the way he deals with the media. He simply doesn't understand that every comment he makes is put under a microscope and analysed. He simply starts prattling off with his horrendous accent and reveals too much about what he's really thinking. Then we have the fallout with players and fans freaking out. It's enough already.

So in his first year he cuts Gamble, and forces Gross into a restructure.  Gamble retires.

In his second, Gross retires, G-Man treats Smitty like a has-been, and doesn't even bother with Munnerlyn.

Hurney was loyal to his guys to a fault.  Think Gettleman is doing it right, or is he the anti-Hurney?

Doing it right.

    • A lot of young QB's struggle with holding on to the ball top long. He has gotten better progressively in that regard. Pocket Time(in Sec):  2.5(2023), 2.3(2024), 2.2(2025) Time to Throw(in Sec): 2.9(2023), 2.79(2024), 2.82(2025) The divedends have been fairly small, is the issue.
    • I'm firing DC, though I think it actually makes the job less attractive. He's not prepared to be a HC and it's showed. A new HC is not going to be tied automatically to BY. He's going to want to bring in some level of competition in the QB room because anyone who has ever watched football knows our QB room is lacking. If he doesn't, that tells a more interesting tale of who's really calling the shots.  Dave hasn't been decisive enough in game and that leadership council BS has trust fall vibes. Our offense has been pathetically stale and vanilla. Our run game while good has made no sense based on who has been playing best. Our defense is improved but they can't be expected to hold opposing teams to below 17 a game because our offense can't score consistently.  We've beaten some teams we shouldn't have beaten, specifically GB and the Rams, and I think our record doesn’t accurately reflect where the team and the coaching really is. We've fallen flat against a geriatric rookie QB leading a 2-10 NO team and got our ass handed to us TWICE. We're unprepared for the biggest games.  This is what happens though when real coaching candidates turn down interviews because your owner is a narcissistic butthole. You get someone no one else bothered to call and you get the results everyone else would have expected if they had.
    • The Saints would be 2-12 if not for us. We are 50% of their wins. A organization serious about the playoffs does not get bullied by a sh*t team like the Saints TWICE. It's over my brotha.
