Steve Smith at Clemson pro day

im thinking its about martavis Bryant not watkins

I was joking, lol.

I love Watkins' game, but WR is so deep this year, you could very well hit the lottery and your odds could be just as good to draft a potential all-pro in the 3rd round as it would be in the 1st.

Steve Smith: I'm a Panther until I'm told otherwise

Steve Smith didn’t want to discuss the specifics of his meeting with Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman earlier this week.

When asked by ESPN at Clemson's Pro Day about the likelihood of returning to the Panthers in 2014 for his 14th season, Smith said he is still a member of the Carolina Panthers but didn’t say much more.

“Here’s all I have to say about it,” Smith said. “I am working out and doing all the things as I am a Carolina Panther. That’s where I am. And I’ll continue to move forward until I am told otherwise.”

Smith, the franchise’s all-time leading receiver, reiterated his surprise when he heard he was “part of the evaluation process.” Gettleman said those words at the NFL scouting combine, and Tuesday was the first time Smith had spoken with Gettleman since his exit interview following the playoff loss to San Francisco.

“Like every offseason they are making moves and making decisions that are going to be, moving forward, for the betterment of the team,” Smith told ESPN. “Those decisions and those conversations I don’t know all of them. I’m not in the meeting rooms. But we talked about some things. And what we talked about it is what we talked about.”

Smith has said he can’t envision not playing in 2014. But with the possibility of not being on the Panthers’ roster in 2014, Smith was asked if he could imagine playing for any other team. He dodged that question, as well.

“It’s a business and I understand that, and ultimately decisions aren’t up to me,” Smith said. “I’m a player. At the end of the day, if a team decides to move on, I have to either accept that or I go sit at home and cry about it. So we’ll see.”

Smith is scheduled to make $4 million in base salary this year, with a cap figure of $7 million. He did not discuss any specifics regarding his contract.

I am starting to think Watkins is treading into Michael Crabtree overrated in draft territory.

His performance at the combine had some suprising average results. He also ran 30 bubble screens a game. I mean he is good but not trade future picks for him good.

I like Martavious Bryant but only as a 5th -6th round pick type guy. He reminds me of Drew Carter a lot..or a poor mans Justin Hunter.

    • I liked him when he was at Michigan because I'm a Wolverine homer. After that...
    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
