The last five Panther drafts (Where are they now?)

Saw a blurb on PFT that said the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of eight teams who have no players left over from their 2009 draft class.  Curiosity got the better of me so I clicked the link to the story.

 

Yes, we're one of them :(

 

Still curious, I decided to research the years from 2009 since just to see where our draft picks were now.  Results are below, with info added for anyone not currently on roster and picks that were traded.

 

 

2013

Nobody left from 2009.  Only one player left from 2010 (Greg Hardy) and two from 2011 (Cam Newton, Kealoha Pilares) though I seriously doubt Pilares makes the final roster this year.  Realistically, a lot of the "attending camp with" guys will be free agents come September.

 

The top half of the 2012 draft still looks decent.  The bottom half not so much except for Brad Nortman.  As with Pilares, I question whether Josh Norman sticks this season.

 

Obviously, the 2013 class is still writing their story, but outside of Edmund Kugbila and (some would argue) Kenjon Barner, the early returns are good.

 

As five year histories go though, only three (realistically two) players left out of that three year stretch from 2009 to 2011 is a pretty big red flag for a team whose philosophy is "build though the draft" :unsure:

 

Definitely looking for improvement in the years ahead...

And of course the obvious ones like Armanti Edwards, Jimmy Clausen and Everette Brown.

 

I'm trying to remember how it was that I ever imagined a perennially contending Panthers team led by the combo of Clausen to Edwards :wacko:

That's pretty standard fair.  You can look at many teams and see the same thing.   The average NFL player career is 3.5 years.  The build through the draft philosophy is based developing your core through the draft and picking up small pieces through trade and free agency.  The build through the draft means you aren't going to spend big money with FA.

 

So basically we have:

QB of the future

MLB of the future along with AJ Klein who looks like he can play a long time as well.

DT's of the future

DE's of the future (hopefully)

 

Now we have to sure up the other parts....

 

If you look at other people drafts it's not much better than ours tbh.

It is not surprising that we had so much churn since 2009 with a new head coach and a new GM.  Obviously they do not value the talent we had the same as Hurney and Fox did.  Lets see how we do over the next few years if there is any consistency at the coaching and GM position. Gettleman is still turning over the roster this year as well.

The last two years skew things a little in the overall results.

 

I'll grant that there's a lot of turnover in the league, but three whole drafts netting only two players is awful.

That was the second time I've seen him up close.  The first time was right after we drafted him and I was in shock at how big that dude was.  When I saw him this weekend he was thin as a rail and looked like someone that would be hanging out on N. Tryon.

I know the Patriots draft history since Pioli left sucks.

 

The Steelers used to be one of the best drafting teams in the league.  These days I think they're slipping.

Have to be honest here, I'm not shocked.

 

I thought that Hurney had one of the worst "eyes" for talent in the league.  Probably relied upon his scouting staff far too much, didn't understand schemes, nor did he plan for the future.
