The last five Panther drafts (Where are they now?)

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Saw a blurb on PFT that said the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of eight teams who have no players left over from their 2009 draft class.  Curiosity got the better of me so I clicked the link to the story.

Yes, we're one of them :(

Still curious, I decided to research the years from 2009 since just to see where our draft picks were now.  Results are below, with info added for anyone not currently on roster and picks that were traded.

2013

1 -  DT Star Lotulelei
2 -  DT Kawann Short
3 -  Traded to San Francisco (Frank Alexander)
4 -  T Edmund Kugbila
5 -  LB A.J. Klein
6 -  RB Kenjon Barner
7 -  Traded to Oakland (Louis Murphy)

2012

1 -  LB Luke Kuechly
2 -  G Amini Silatolu
3 -  Traded to Chicago (Greg Olsen)
4 -  DE Frank Alexander
4 -  WR-RS Joe Adams (out of football)
5 -  CB Josh Norman (probably 50-50 to make this year's roster)
6 -  P Brad Nortman
7 -  S D.J. Campbell (will attend training camp with the San Francisco 49ers)

2011

1 -  QB Cam Newton
2 -  Traded to New England (Armanti Edwards)
3 -  DT Terrell McClain (will attend training camp with the Dallas Cowboys)
3 -  DT Sione Fua (backup for the Denver Broncos)
4 -  CB Brandon Hogan (playing in the CFL)
5 -  WR-KR Kealoha Pilares (long shot to make this year's roster)
6 -  LB Lawrence Wilson (will attend training camp with the Chicago Bears)
6 -  G Zack Williams (playing in the Arena Football League)
7 -  T Lee Ziemba (out of football)

2010

1 -  Traded to San Francisco (Everette Brown)
2 -  QB Jimmy Clausen (free agent)
3 -  WR Brandon LaFell (signed with New England Patriots)
3 -  WR-RS Armanti Edwards (free agent)
4 -  DE Eric Norwood (playing in the CFL)
5 -  Traded to Kansas City (Tank Tyler)
6 -  DE Greg Hardy
6 -  WR David Gettis (will attend training camp with the Washington Redskins)
6 -  S Jordan Pugh (will attend training camp with the New Orleans Saints)
6 -  QB Tony Pike (officially "retired")
7 -  CB R.J. Stanford (will attend training camp with the Cincinnati Bengals)
7 -  CB Robert McClain (backup for the Atlanta Falcons)

2009

1 -  Traded to Eagles (Jeff Otah)
2 -  DE Everette Brown (free agent)
2 -  S Sherrod Martin (will attend training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars)
3 -  DT Corvey Irvin (will attend training camp with the Detroit Lions)
4 -  RB Mike Goodson (still with the New York Jets; legal issues still unresolved)
4 -  FB Tony Fiammetta (will attend training camp with the Chicago Bears)
5 -  G Duke Robinson (playing in the Arena Football League)
6 -  Traded to Oakland (trade down)
7 -  CB Captain Munnerlyn (signed with the Minnesota Vikings)

Nobody left from 2009.  Only one player left from 2010 (Greg Hardy) and two from 2011 (Cam Newton, Kealoha Pilares) though I seriously doubt Pilares makes the final roster this year.  Realistically, a lot of the "attending camp with" guys will be free agents come September.

The top half of the 2012 draft still looks decent.  The bottom half not so much except for Brad Nortman.  As with Pilares, I question whether Josh Norman sticks this season.

Obviously, the 2013 class is still writing their story, but outside of Edmund Kugbila and (some would argue) Kenjon Barner, the early returns are good.

As five year histories go though, only three (realistically two) players left out of that three year stretch from 2009 to 2011 is a pretty big red flag for a team whose philosophy is "build though the draft"

Definitely looking for improvement in the years ahead...

Names out of that list that make me wince...

Joe Adams

Terrell McClain

Sione Fua

Brandon Hogan

Tony Pike

Duke Robinson

And of course the obvious ones like Armanti Edwards, Jimmy Clausen and Everette Brown.

I'm trying to remember how it was that I ever imagined a perennially contending Panthers team led by the combo of Clausen to Edwards

That's pretty standard fair.  You can look at many teams and see the same thing.   The average NFL player career is 3.5 years.  The build through the draft philosophy is based developing your core through the draft and picking up small pieces through trade and free agency.  The build through the draft means you aren't going to spend big money with FA.

So basically we have:

QB of the future

MLB of the future along with AJ Klein who looks like he can play a long time as well.

DT's of the future

DE's of the future (hopefully)

Now we have to sure up the other parts....

If you look at other people drafts it's not much better than ours tbh.

It is not surprising that we had so much churn since 2009 with a new head coach and a new GM.  Obviously they do not value the talent we had the same as Hurney and Fox did.  Lets see how we do over the next few years if there is any consistency at the coaching and GM position. Gettleman is still turning over the roster this year as well.

The last two years skew things a little in the overall results.

I'll grant that there's a lot of turnover in the league, but three whole drafts netting only two players is awful.

Speaking of former draft picks I saw Dewayne Jarrett at the Harris Teeter this weekend.  He wasn't looking like he would be making a comeback anytime soon.

Officially he's 'retired'

That pass Jarrett caught from Matt Moore at the end of the 2009 season to beat the Saints had me thinking maybe the light would come on and we might get something going there.

Yeah... :(

That was the second time I've seen him up close.  The first time was right after we drafted him and I was in shock at how big that dude was.  When I saw him this weekend he was thin as a rail and looked like someone that would be hanging out on N. Tryon.

Love to see that breakdown with some other teams in the league... looks pretty sketchy to me.

I'm sure someone has done it.  I'm not about to try

I know the Patriots draft history since Pioli left sucks.

The Steelers used to be one of the best drafting teams in the league.  These days I think they're slipping.

Have to be honest here, I'm not shocked.

I thought that Hurney had one of the worst "eyes" for talent in the league.  Probably relied upon his scouting staff far too much, didn't understand schemes, nor did he plan for the future.

    • I hope Bryce balls out. Wouldn't bet the farm on it though. Morgan has to be practical though. He was placed into a situation where he was compelled to give Bryce a long look. There really haven't been any more practical options due to who has been available at the position. The Panthers had already put their chips in with Bryce, so putting more chips in by borrowing against the future and stacking on that by borrowing against the future without really having the requisite draft capital was a nonstarter. We could either dump Bryce and go dumpster diving for known and unknown JAGs at the position, or take out chances and let it play out with Bryce and hope for acceptable returns. Due to what looks like some good moves in the draft and free agency, it appears like we're finally getting into a position where we can take a swing again if need be without destroying the core of the team. I understand that you'll believe it when you see it, but Dan is gonna move on if Bryce can't cut it. There are too many professionals lives and careers tied to Bryce to simply accept the status quo.
    • Football is the ultimate team sport. No sport is more dependent on others for your success - including coaching. I don't know if Bryce is the guy, but I do know this has been a very bad team all around since he got here. One of the worst o-lines and coaching staffs I've ever seen his rookie year. One of the worst defenses and receiving groups (including TEs) I've ever seen his 2nd season - with a rookie HC and OC. An improving WR group his 3rd season mostly due to a rookie. The only other WR of note didn't really play well until after the 10th game of the season due to injury. Still no receiving TE to speak of. And lost games because of the worst pass rush in the NFL. And the only speed he's ever had on the field was DJ Chark. A washed up DJ Chark that played here one year and has had 31 yards receiving since leaving.  Carolina had no business moving up for a QB in 2023. They weren't ready. Especially if it meant trading your only good WR to do it. Now finally there's potential on defense. Potential on o-line. Potential at WR, including some actual speed in a game where speed kills. If BY falls on his face this season, then he has to own it. Situation may not be perfect, but it's at least NFL average across the board. I won't beat him up for being bad in bad situations on a bad team. But a 4th year QB has to be able to control the offense and make players/coaches right. The team looks good enough on paper to show what he can do now.
