Will Fox Try To Win With Offense This Season?

That is chicken little mentality. One guy doesn't kill your chances nor will he be the only guy we lose. Kemo was very valuable last year but how effective he would be in our new scheme remained to be seen. You can't decide how we will be based on last year's results since we are running different line schemes and have a different line philosophy. Teams like the Eagles were 4th in run defense last year with no DT over 305 lbs. It is some about how big you are but also about speed, leverage and other factors.

I would rep you if I could.

I remember musing late last year about it, and asking if Fox had embraced the idea of becoming an offensive team rather than a defensive one.

I's day it's a legit possibility. Brian Billick became leader of a defensive juggernaut and Tony Dungy took over a team that was best known for Peyton Manning. Fox xould see a similar transition.

I don't know....if Fox wants to make the transition he needs to learn to go for the throat and not play it safe as much....and that isn't something Fox will do imo.

He also doesn't have the QB to go that route imo.

I think Fox thought for the first 6 years he was here that he could win on defense and have an offense that didn't lose the game for him. Over time I think he has realized that you need a team that is more balanced and when the defense isn't playing so well, the offense can step up and win it like they did last year. The problem in 2007 and 2008 was that we spent all this money on the defensive side and didn't get very good results. So he spent a bunch of money on the offensive side and looks what happened. As he said in early 09- last year I fixed the offense and this year I am going to fix the defense. I think he believes by investing in young cheap talent through the draft, he doesn't have to choose between the two but have a good offense and defense.

I think it behooves us to try to win with offense early on. We already have a defensive unit that is in flux (installing a new system, new DC) and now arguably in shambles (after losing a defensive cornerstone for the season). Conversely, we have one of the most potent ground attacks this decade has seen, and a moderately dangerous passing game. Why not use it? It won't last the whole season, just maybe the first 4-6 weeks to allow our defense to play catch-up and get settled. By week 6 we will have made some roster moves, the early season injury bug will be gone, and the defense will have figured out its new scheme and found depth.

So yeah, let the offense off the chain to start the season.

I find it amusing how so many people on here are buddy-buddy with Meeks, knowing exactly what schemes our D will run this season. Yeah, Kemo...big deal.

I bet is it a safe bet Meeks went to bed last night not fully knowing what schemes he will be running on D now.....I'm sure he had a general idea but yesterday could have tweaked what him and Fox talked about prior to TC.

I think we need to throw to our TE more often, the middle of the field is always open. If teams play 8 in the box and double team Smitty along with single coverage on Moose, who is covering the TE?

No one, because the TE isn't running a pattern. When they have 8 men in the box, our TE is blocking.

But I agree with your point, we do need to get the TE more involved in the passing game. Based on Davidson's history, I can't believe he hasn't gotten them more involved thus far

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
