Bill Voth says no tackle in the first

There’s three guys in this draft that can definitely play left tackle in the NFL: Auburn’s Greg Robinson, Texas A&M’s Jake Matthews and Michigan’s Taylor Lewan. The rest could be right tackles, but there’s no guarantees they could play left.

You don’t pick right tackles in the first round. And if Gettleman isn’t sure a guy at 28 can play left tackle, he’s not going to take him.

So here’s the second part — all that doesn’t necessarily mean the second nugget in Kiper’s update will happen.

Yes, receivers’ coach Ricky Proehl has been sent all around the country for a reason. The Panthers are turning over every wideout rock they can, not just because it’s a need, but because there’s a whole bunch of talent out there.

But once the Panthers are on the clock at 28, if someone at another position — say cornerback — is higher on Carolina’s board than a receiver, they’re going to take the one they believe gives them the best value.

Two weeks out from the draft, I can’t tell you who the Panthers are going to take. Shoot, considering all that could happen in front of them, they can’t be sure who they’re going to take.

But whether it’s Kouandjio, Virginia’s Morgan Moses or most other tackles currently mocked either late in the first round or the second, the point is a tackle sounds unlikely. The feeling I get is if Gettleman does go tackle at 28, it’ll be someone most weren’t expecting.

This seems to fly in the face of folks who think that need will be big factor in determining Gettleman's BPA philosophy.  Sure he could take a tackle or wide receiver or corner or other position.  But it will be based on who they think is the BPA not the BPA at a position of need.

Those thinking that receiver is the obvious choice might be surprised as well if the top guys are all gone at 28.  The only way we go WR is if there are guys who are head and shoulders above who we could get at 60 and there are no guys who are clearly shoulders above the rest at other positions.

    • Well he quickly deflected the question about Rico's "almost 7 YPC." He is very polished and he transitioned well to non-answers and side steps. I can see why a guy like him was able to pull the wool over on guys like Tepper.
    • 31st rushing D and 8 carries by Rico is coaching.  Rico is easily the best offensive weapon right now and it’s not really close.  *literally everyone knows Dalton is washed, horrible and shouldn’t even be a backup QB.   Drive 1? ZERO carries.  Coaching.  Drive 2 - Rico was playing great.   Did Canales lean into that or go for “balance”? Coaching. Drive 3 - ZERO carries.  Coaching  Drive 4 - 1 carry and opted for Jimmy Horn gadget rush (you can’t stick  with the Horn repetitive gadget runs each week and that’s not a better idea than getting Rico going)  Drive 5 - basically Dalton heavy as the half expired.  I don’t need to watch a game to know it’s coaching.  The gameplan wasn’t about setting Rico up to go off on a trash rush D.  It was bullshit harmony balance of the rush and the pass and making Hubbard feel good.
    • In the locker room after the Dallas game, multiple  players said FEED him when Canales mentioned Rico stats. That already made me think even the locker room wouldn't care if Rico got the touches rn. This is on Canales indeed and I agree n the Qb take.  We aren't winning  bc of Bryce  but he has been managing it. Had the Jets had Qb aptitude,  we could've probably  lost that game too. All they would've needed is 14 points. Regardless, we got a team  that's being built up and that position needs an overhaul.  If ww lock in to Bryce, it'd be no different  than the 49ers locking into Purdy. Can't do it!
