Falling QB's - A Trip Down Memory Lane

With all the talk of Johnny Football and Teddy B not even going in the first round, let's not forget these old gems:

Cam Newton isn't a first-round pick

As valuable as size, speed and strength are, they do have limitations when evaluating players. Pro football history is full of imposing physical specimens who didn't pan out because they had some weaknesses that more than offset their elite physical attributes (e.g. Brian Bosworth, Mike Mamula, Lawrence Phillips).

Despite the clear historical warnings, in just about every draft there are teams that will select a player based on his physical attributes, ignoring his glaring football deficiencies.

The 2010 Denver Broncos offered a good example of this when they drafted last year's somewhat flawed quarterbacking phenom, The Golden Calf of Bristol. The recent comments of John Elway, one of the Broncos' new head honchos and a man who knows a thing or two about quarterbacking, that The Golden Calf of Bristol is still "very raw," even after a year in the system, say their organization is probably going through a serious case of buyer's remorse.

Cam Newton not worthy of a first-round pick

Theismann said last week on ESPN Radio that he doesn't value Newton highly as an NFL prospect, and said he wouldn't consider him for a top selection.

"To be honest with you, and I've never said this any place else, I don't think Cam Newton's a first-round pick," Theismann told 980 AM in Washington, D.C., via The Washington Post.

Newton won the Heisman Trophy and led Auburn to a national title last season. The Carolina Panthers are projected by many analysts to choose him with the first overall pick.

I think Manziel is a bust. He might put up some numbers early in his career but his size and skillset are not impressive. I don't consider him a hard worker like Russel Wilson. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm right for the wrong reasons. But I think Manziel is a bust.

Alright so now since we have Nostradamus in the building who are are we going to draft in the first 3 rounds?

What exactly makes you think he isn't a hard worker like Russell Wilson?

You said that same type of silliness about Cam Newton last year.

I had already thought that KC Joyner was a self congratulatory contrarian who used flimsy data and cherry picked stats to make himself feel smart, but was actually an idiot.

When this article came out and subsequent articles about Cam after he set the NFL on fire, to try to barely hang on to whatever credibility he had left by belittling his accomplishments, cemented that belief for me.

Bridgewater is someone you'll see making Pro Bowls in a few years.

I'd say Derek Carr is probably the next guy I'd take after Bridgewater if we threw round values out of the picture.

    • Damn Logan Jones had a good day too. Was high on him coming in as he anchored that top Iowa line and is a fire plug inside. He's gonna be 25 to start the season so maybe he slips into the 4th but I doubt it, even if C isn't a premium position. His play on the field was top notch and the combine boosted it again. Arm length is about the only knock. But guy is plug and play at C.   This is a loaded class at C. Need to grab one.
    • Bryce will be permanently replaced by a draft pick. There's not another Sam Darnold out there to save us. Tepper is going to see this throw because he dumped Mayfield and Darnold too soon. He's going to give it 1 more year before he will sign off on dumping another 1st round pick qb. Thats the cold hard truth of it. It doesn't mean we can't get younger and much better at the backup position.
    • Maybe I should have used a different word and saved that for me. I want someone that has something impressive about them.  Someone that has potential to supplant a guy who is producing 25th best type of numbers. 22nd, 27th all that bottom third neighborhood.  I don’t know where that will come from it just can’t be from even a 4th round pick this year IMO. Unless FA is crazy productive.    I’ll give Bryce a better than bottom rating for his playoff game. Well above low twenties. But at least half of his games were bottom third level. Probably 2/3 to 3/4 of them were.
