Kapernick's deal should be the blueprint for all big contracts

Not so much in terms of the dollar amount but more in a sense of the structure.

The contract has a potential to be worth up to 126 Million through 2020.

 

However the only money he is truly guaranteed to see is around 13.1 Million.

 

He got a signing bonus of 12,328,000 (Essentially cash in fist the moment the contract is signed)....The additional 100 % guaranteed portion is this years salary and 645k + 100k workout bonus.

 

The contract runs through 2020. Starting in 2015 and running til the end (2020) 2 million per year can only be earned if he plays 80% of the snaps and either makes the superbowl or is named 1st or 2nd team all pro.

 

The salaries from 2015-2017 are fully guaranteed only if he is not cut before april 1st of that year

 

Additionally 2 million per year is in the form of per game bonuses...125k per game.

 

The dead money if he is cut is only from the small signing bonus as long as they cut him before April 1st. Take a look a spotrac's breakdown of the dead money and then compare it to Jonathan Stewart's if he was cut and prepare to amp up more anger for Hurney..

 

Lastly the money in the last 2 years of the contract (a total of 44.6 million) has 0 guarantee or anything that will cause a penny in dead money if they decide to cut bait on him..

 

 

I love these incentive laden contracts as it gives a player the opportunity to earn above their market value if they perform. On the flip side it gives the team a nice escape clause if the player does not hold up their end of the bargain.

 

I'd much rather see Hardy sign a contract like this vs. handing him a check for 30 million (like CJ's deal) up front and make him prove he's worth the money on and off the field even if it cost a little extra in the long run.

Kaepernick is on a stacked team, he had a little leverage, but not that much when you really think about it.

 

Other players coming up on big pay days who have just about all the leverage will not not accept this kind of deal.

I wonder how the trade off works in negotiations between guaranteed money and potential total money. If I'm Kap I take a deal worth half as much but with 2x the guaranteed money every day. But the exchange rate may not be totally linear like that.

In regards to the structure, you have to really give it to the 49ers.  Great, cap and team friendly deal.  If Kaep performs, he gets the riches.  If he bombs, he's easy to cut.

 

I think his agency is going to feel the worst of it.  No one will want to sign with them.  The NFL(for many players) is about getting as much money as you can before you suffer a catasrophic injury.  Getting those Deangelo Williams, Jonathon Stewart contracts is the goal!  Be set for life!  His agents are hinging his money on his durability and ability to perform at a high level.  What happens if he gets nicked up, bad shoulder or something, and his performance goes to poo for a season? 

 

It's a great contract for the 49ers, but not so good for Kaep.  I don't feel too bad because he get's that $13 million signing bonus, which is more money that I could ever make up front. Even after taxes and all his retainer fees and cuts, he's going to be wealthy beyond the average human being's understanding.

Cam is not going to get shafted like this in his contract. The guy has been our entire offense for 3 years. He's already proved it, kaepernick hasn't which is why all those clauses are in there.

This is exactly the kind of contract teams need to stick to so that it becomes the norm and not the exception.  Where else do people get paid tens of millions of dollars if they don't perform and are not even working there anymore.  It is crazy to pay a player 30 million guaranteed even if they don't play 1 snap.  That is crazy just like baseball where everything is guaranteed.  I don't understand why everyone thinks Kaepernick is getting shafted. If he gets hurt tomorrow and can't play he doesn't deserve to get paid either.  The only way he should get paid big bucks is to perform at a high level.

He would get 12 million in a signing bonus if he got hurt tomorrow so it isn't as if he would be penniless.  Plus most players have huge injury insurance policies which pay them or the team huge dollars if the get hurt and can't play.  But guaranteeing them upwards of 30 million is just plain stupid.
