Do you have a second team to root for?

I will never understand how the people that refuse to watch any other team but the Panthers can be so vocal when it comes to opinions about other teams or the NFL in general when they can know nothing about either. I guess you can be a Panther fan and not a fan of the NFL in general but that is hard for me to grasp.

How can you even rate your own team when you don't know the level of competition that is out there?

I'm all Panthers all the way, but since I lived in Detroit for about 15 years I've gotten to feel so sorry for their fans that I would like to see the Lions succeed. I watch all their games that don't conflict with the Panthers and hope they win if they aren't playing the Panthers.. But I haven't been to Lions game since I left Detroit and I don't follow them at all in the offseason compared to how much I follow the Panthers. I will admit, I have a Calvin Johnson jersey... Don't wear it though, just have it since I met him a couple times and he was the absolute man off the field, in addition to being a beast on it. Went to a couple jazz bars with him, pretty cool guy, so I bought his jersey.

I have a lot of family in the Seattle region and have been to a few of their games over the years (unfortunately, only when they've sucked).  Add in the fact that I'm an NC State grad and Seattle is a pretty clear second favorite for me.  However, it's just a situation of "if it doesn't hurt the Panthers in any way, then I hope Seattle wins their games too" kind of thing.  I don't actively follow the team and I've never rooted for them in any situation where them winning could hurt the Panthers.  It also doesn't really bother me much if they lose.  Not even close to what I feel when the Panthers lose.

When I think about it, the difference between "favorite" and "second favorite" is so huge that the two are barely even comparable.  I guess there are 5 tiers for me:  Panthers >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Seahawks>>Teams I don't dislike>>Teams I dislike>>>>>Teams I despise.

I guess I'll go against the grain and say yes.

I'm from Huntersville but my dad is from Texas, and since I was little he tried to sway me towards the Cowboys, especially since the Panthers weren't around til I was 4. I root for them to win every one of their games (except against the Panthers) as a #2 team but I don't follow them in depth.

I also gravitated towards the Broncos when I was a kid because I loved Elway and Davis, and to a young kid having a few teams to root for doesn't seem so outlandish - just like that kid for make a wish foundation who is from Houston but loves Cam.

Neither the Cowboys or Broncos are even in the same area code of the obsessive fandom I have for the Panthers, but I am certainly fans of those two teams.

I like the Chiefs because of Hall of Famer Bobby Bell. He's friends with my aunt and gave me a signed Kansas City Ambassadors football. Since then, he's made a few trips to Concord to eat dinner with us and even attended my Grandmother's funeral this past summer. Great, great guy. He'd be my nomination for The Most Interesting Man in the World.

Having said that, I spend too much time following the Panthers, getting into arguments with other fans about Cam's legitimacy, and defending Luke as the league's best player to follow KC.

i had a soft spot for the 9ers because i'm from there and grew up watching rice, young, norton, davis ect. and one of my dad's coworkers son played OL for them.

kaepernick fuged that up. i can't stand them anymore.

i will say my father thinks cam is the greatest thing since sliced bread which is high praise for someone who watched montana and young and all those superbowls and is pretty knowledgeable about the game.

    • Same, bro.  Yeah, it just feels it has run its course and I don’t know that we’ll ever get more value.  Plus, with the new ownership, this draft has been super encouraging, so dare I believe maybe this FO can get something to really put us over the top in return for Melo.  I’ll still be a fan of his game and try to keep up with him if we move on, but yeah, I feel it’s time to turn the page. (and side note: I felt so happy after their rookie years because I told everybody I wanted Melo and didn’t trust Ant.  And Melo clearly looked like the better player early…  I thought Ant would bust because all that stuff he said about not loving the game and just his resume to that point…  but damn, if we could go back in time.🤣🤣🤣. I love Ant’s game and at times, when he gets in the zone, he is THE BEST player in the league in my opinion.)
    • Appreciate that, bro!  And I could definitely see that with Cam.  Even though he’s a little younger than me, he is also someone I admire and feel a kinship with for a lot of various reasons. Funny enough, a few years after that encounter with Steve, I went to Charlotte with one of my friends whose brothers owned a moving company at the time.  He dropped me off uptown and went to work the day with them where I would wait until he got done and then we were gonna go to the Bobcats game that night.  So I walk all through that area for hours.  After awhile, I walk back towards the arena and sit in a bench on the backside of the arena, where the practice court and player’s entrance was.  As I’m sitting there, I look up and almost think I’m seeing things - I squint and blink my eyes a couple times just to be sure, and yes…  it’s one of my childhood heroes, Muggsy Bogues walking across the crosswalk and into the arena.  I think he was coaching the Sting then, iirc.  Part of me wanted to just say, “Hey!  Muggsy!  Thank you for the inspiration and memories!  You were one of my favorite players as a kid!”  But, I just watched him walk by and into the arena and thought, “that was cool!”  I also so Miguel Cotto a couple years back while in Orlando and told my kids who it was but didn’t say anything to him.  I think somewhere in my subconscious, that encounter with Steve really made me feel like the gamble on finding out if they’re receptive to interaction just isn’t worth finding out.  At the end of the day, no matter if they’re receptive inspired us or were a hero, unless they initiate it, I likely never will…  because again, they’re humans just like us.  Not anymore unique or special, they just have a highly visible and very public job that we get to watch and in some ways participate.  So, I just appreciate it for what it is.
    • I'm pleasantly surprised they gave it to Bryce Young over Josh Allen. Finally we're getting some respect. Now I'm just hoping the team follows this up accordingly and doesn't lay another egg.
