Cock Problem

First of all....shame on you for opening a thread with this title.

Anyway about a year ago I decided to trade in my bachelor lifestyle in the city of Charlotte and move out into the country. For those that know me personally, I know that may be hard to believe but it's true. Anyway, I live on about 2 acres of land with a few neighbors dotted about. Well a couple months ago a lone, small chicken showed up in our yard. It was actually pretty cool at first but fast forward a couple of months and now there are about a dozen that wander into our yard everyday/all day. All full grown chickens and one rooster. Now I know that they have done wonders with bugs, fire ants, etc but they also can do some damage. Our yard is meticulously landscaped especially around our in ground pool. It's kind of like a back yard oasis surrounded by mulch, palm trees, rose bushes, etc which was expensive to do and maintain.

The chickens have tore up all of the mulch around the pool and dug down into all of the rose bushes exposing the roots and the roses are beginning to show the signs of the damage. We have also found chickens in our pool. Our dog has killed a couple of them in the past which we felt bad about at first.

Without getting into all the details, the neighbors who own them are totally unresponsive to our requests to do something about this. Animal control says there is nothing that can be done because they are poultry. Now I don't like to kill animals and my GF can't stand the thought of it but I am at my wits end with this and am about to start taking care of them myself. When we contacted animal control, they said most people just talk to their neighbors and get the problem corrected or decide to make chicken stew.

Anyone have any good ideas about what else I can do and do you know if I am in my legal right to shoot them if it comes down to it?

I would make some delicious fried chicken, and offer it to the neighbor every time I had a batch ready.

Just me though.

If they are tearing up your stuff, there will be no recourse, as long as you are out of the city.

Yeah, I am out of the city. I just don't want to shoot them if I can avoid it. Another thing that is in the back of my mind is that my dog gets loose once or twice a year. He is harmless lab mix and not threatening in anyway but loves to run free when given the opportunity and if he goes over there, they may take revenge on him (and probably legally could) and then things will get ugly.

I don't know the law there, of course, but they would probably get in real trouble for killing a dog, whereas, you have talked to them about it, and poultry can do damage to landscaping and such.

That said, I certainly get where you are coming from on that front.

Go have one more talk with him, take over some pictures, and let him know that if he doesn't put them in a coup, you will have no choice but to protect your property.

This is coming from a country boy, turned city a long time ago.

Animal control should be able to do something since there's been property damage. If they refuse to do anything, call the sheriff's department. Property damage is a criminal offense and the owners should be held responsible.

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
