Cole: Panthers want to break sack record

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Apparently, Greg Hardy isn't the only member of the Carolina Panthersdefense with lofty -- and perhaps farfetched -- sack goals.

Defensive tackle Colin Cole says the focus after Carolina collected a team-record 60 sacks last season is to set an NFL single-season record in 2014.

Asked if he knew what that was, the 34-year-old player Cole wiped the sweat off his face and admitted he didn't. Neither did I for sure until I looked it up. It was the 1984 Chicago Bears..

They had 72.

Now collecting 13 more sacks than last season may not sound insurmountable. It's certainly not as unrealistic as Hardy setting his personal goal for 50, which is more than twice the NFL single-season record of 22.5 that Michael Strahan had in 2001.

We would need to average 4.6 sacks per game to break the record. Really doesn't seem impossible TBH.

I dont see a problem with this.

From later in the article:

But if Cole can improve his total by one and everybody else does as well, then the record would fall. That Carolina has its entire front seven back with the addition of second-round draft pick Kony Ealy as another threat makes Cole even more optimistic.

Aiming for 1 more sack a game per person I think it sets a reasonable bar and an overall admirable goal.

Didn't we have two games with seven or so sacks last year - giants and @falcons? Falcons was actually more I think - I was there and very innebriated along with Roaring Riots crew and i think we all lost count tha day. Anyways, those outings are hard to replicate and you probably need four or so of those truly dominating performances (8+ sack games) to get near that record.

We had like 10 or 11 in the game against the Falcons I think.

Johnson: 15

Hardy: 15

Addison: 5

Cole: 5

KK: 5

Star: 4

Alexander: 3

Edwards: 3

Kuechly: 5

Davis: 4

Klein: 2

Safeties Combined: 4

Corners Combined: 3

Certainly not an easy task, but not out of the realm of rational possibility.

Somewhere in there, I have to expect Ealy will get atleast a sack.

Not sure our secondary will be good enough to give them a shot.  The pass rush gets all the credit, but a lot of sacks in reality are coverage sacks.  If the QB gets sacked after about the 3 second mark, the secondary deserves at least half the credit.  Over 4 seconds and the secondary deserves the majority of the credit to be honest.

    • You’re playing madden we’re talking real football stuff…. He does have you seen his special on internet he def thinks he’s getting paid
    • Without the team having an identity kinda hard to predict what they value.  They either are really trying to build a balanced team, or preparing for another swing at qb if Bryce doesn’t pan out. Seems like we value the o line but the $ spent there has been underwhelming besides Lewis, you could say it’s because of injuries but still hasn’t been worth the investment. as already stated, the whole handling of Bryce young as a whole has been ass backwards, we spent the years we’re supposed to take advantage of having a qb with a lower cap hit, building the team up to be adequate. now It appears, key word appears, the saints have done it correctly, which is painful to even think about. Regardless, I hope the front office has paid attention to qb contracts recently, such as Tua, Kyler, Daniel jones(pre colts) and don’t settle for subpar qb play at franchise qb rates
    • This is the flaw in your logic.  Cutting 3 of our best players will somehow move us from whatever we are to "compete". Even the most Young super fans are not predicting a ceiling above top 10-12, and that will not nearly cut it.  Someone will need to break the log jam of QBs getting nothing or North of 50. Our qb is at best a middle ground, lets hope it will be us that also manage to pay the worth at about 100 over 3 years.  And before you jump me, yes that is only of he improves.
