Ron Rivera: Hot Seat?

I think as long as he doesn't go back to his conservative ways he will be fine and a great coach. Plus Gettleman seems like a great talent evaluator. How many times did Hurney bring undrafted rookies that could actually compete

I don't think anyone is prepared to give anyone a free pass this year, but this is a team that's still hamstrung by Hurney's terrifying idiocy.

I have a hard time seeing Rivera or Gettleman on the hot seat for the 2014-2015 season, even if the wheels come off. But as we head into the next couple of seasons and the ramifications of big, old contracts are lessened, that might be a different story.

you really think so?

i dont think any of us saw that coming from him....

Did the head coach let every WR on the roster walk, leaving Cam with an entire roster of new guys?

Was the head coach trying to make us all believers of Byron Bell?

Did the head coach give those ridiculous deals to the RBs?

#'s 1 & 2 i understand wanting to blame gettleman for. not that i agree with blaming him. but i understand. but #3 is just ignorance. Gman didnt give those huge contracts to the RBs.

as for the first two, you need to understand that every decision Gman has made, outside of the release of 89, has been cap-related. they've been meant to get us out of cap-hell. for the nth time, the WRs were left to walk because they demanded too much money. Byron Bell is our guy because he is serviceable for the time being. Gettleman is not a need-based drafter. he will draft according to his perspective for BPA and that is exactly what he did. i dont blame him for not signing any OT talent in the offseason. i wont blame him for it even if the position is a disaster area all season. if it is a disaster, and he does absolutely nothing about it, then i'll question his judgement next offseason. but for now, it is what it is and if you dont like it and get all pissy at the Panthers for it, then you are just as bad as a fairweather fan.

I understand what you're saying, but my point is further illustrated by your comments in that I find it hard to put Rivera on the hot seat when the Panthers are in salary cap hell and can't afford to pay anyone who can help this team reach the playoffs. That was my entire point.

As far as "getting all pissy," I think it's well within my right to get as pissy as I want, when I want given the fact I paid for PSLs and contributed to the salaries that were negotiated for 18 years. I was at games in Clemson in 1995... and I'm still here. If you consider that "fairweather" you might need to refresh your memory with a Websters dictionary.

didnt say you were a fairweather fan. i said that getting pissy makes you just as bad as one. its not my fault you bought into the PSL nonsense. am i correct in saying that you still have to drop hundreds of dollars for tickets AFTER dropping thousands of dollars for the PSL? im sure you make up some of it through resale, but if so then that just lessens your "right" to get pissy. i am sorry but to me, when you put that much money into a team, you do it because you agree with the decisions of the FO. i'll never abandon the Panthers; ive been following them since my Dad got me interested in football back in 2003. but you can bet your ass i wont spend truckloads of money on them every year. if that makes me a fairweather fan, then so be it. but even when i dont agree with the decisions of the front office, i just have no desire to get all crazy over something that i cant change. furthermore, i wasnt necessarily talking to you when i talked about getting pissy. i was making a general statement for people who consistently criticize Gettleman for decisions that had to be made for the financial health of this team. there is no sense in getting up in arms about it right now. the only thing we can do, you or i or anyone else, is to cheer for our team and hope that this coming offseason, Gettleman continues his trend of finding amazing talent and setting this team up for success.

look i didnt mean to start something. it just strikes me as odd that you understand the decisions of the FO, and yet want to complain about them. i think you are giving Gettleman alittle too much hell for his decisions. we can agree that Rivera doesnt deserve to be on the hot seat, but i also think that the jury is still out on Gettleman. so far he seems like an amazing GM, but we'll need to see what he does when the cash flow begins to open up a bit.

Sold my PSLs a following the lockout year. Broke even. Learned my lesson.

Have not yet formed an opinion on Gettlemen, I, like you, need to see what happens when not constrained by his predecessor's stupid decisions. And again, I cannot put Rivera on a short leash given the current salary limitations and the effect it has on the current roster.

If we end up having a 4-14 season or worse then yes I can see Rivera gone.

How can someone that knows so little about football have such strong opinions about what Cam needs to do to improve?

Is the QB position the only thing you know about? Or do you just parrot what others have said?

new WR corps, 4 out of 5 new offensive linemen, 3 out of 4 new secondary.... A chef is only as good as his ingredients, if he gets us to 8 wins with this patchwork then he deserves coach of the year honors

So, you are assuming we had a good WR corps, an OL that kept Cam from being among the most sacked QBs, and a secondary that was not 3 out of 4 new personnel which was called into question in 2013?

You cannot have a drop off on something that was already at the bottom of the league. And Rivera did get coach of the year honors for getting the Panthers to a 12-4 season with a lack of production from the receivers, an OL that got Cam sacked more than 40 times on the season, and a secondary that relied on 3 out of 4 new members who no one was scared of during the entire season.

The front seven, Nortman, Cam, and the running game did the work. When you keep teams under 20 points just about every game you will win games and get to the playoffs.

And while you cannot have a drop off on the areas you just mentioned, I can assure you that the defense is better, the running game is stronger, the red zone offense is more dangerous, and Cam has bigger and more sure handed receiving threats.
