The Cam Newton Conspiracy Theory

I dont think there is any type of conspiracy. HOWEVER, I believe that if the season doesnt go well for Cam and/or the Panthers, one of two things might happen. 1) Cam may get fed-up with the lack of support around him and not sign the big contract, or 2) Cam doesnt improve his accuracy and ability to find the open WR, and the Panthers wait another year before offering the big contract.

Cam is not going to get fed up with Carolina. He has never indicated that he would. He loves the panthers and he puts a lot of the responsibility for success of the panthers on his shoulders  So if the team fails he is not going to all of a sudden throw blame and say that the team didn't surround him with the best talent. Hell Cam even praised the O-line which every one knows is average. Cam is with the panthers for the long haul and as long as they adequately pay him he won't leave.

And to your second point, even if this season Cam stagnates for whatever reason. Gettleman has already called Cam the team's franchise qb. Cam will still get offered a contract that is in line with his abilities and performance of the last 3 years.

A franchise that has never once had a franchise QB finally gets one, right in a time where you NEED a franchise QB, does everything in its power to screw the guy over to try and save a few shekels? Seems legit.

It's not commonplace in the NBA.

lol, are you kidding? There's actually rules going into place now that the 76ers want to hold off for one more year so they can tank again. It's very commonplace in the NBA.

A couple weeks back, it was reported that the NBA was attempting to push through changes to its draft lottery system: a re-weighting of the odds that would discourage tanking. The Philadelphia 76ers would reportedly like the NBA to hold on a sec, because they're not finished being terrible.

Right, but if Cam gets north of 100 mill, Keek gets 70, say Star gets in the 35-50 mill range as does KB, how in the blue hell are we going to afford all that? Not to mention if we get a top 5-top 10 pick a couple drafts between now and then, we also have to pay a nice little chunk for a rookie contract.

I think this will become a big problem is signing all these studs we hit home runs on in the 1st round

Why in the world would we be a top 5-10 pick with those 4 "mega stars"?

I must say that it's kind of odd that an experienced NFL executive and premier personnel guy would choose to half-step at WR in one of the deepest WR-rich drafts in years, all after axing the only veteran WR that was worth a damn on the squad, in an up and coming QB's contract year.

I'm not given to tinfoil has. Just saying that it's kind of a weird plan, and a helluva coincidence.

Agreed with this.

I think saying it's a "conspiracy" is a little much. But it is odd.

    • I am curious to see if Warren is the elite player that the Huddle Warren stans believe. I am always fairly wary of these first round TE's.
    • The Rossi things isn't going away, either... https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/3312416/unfinished-business-7-players-to-watch-in-back-half-of-nhl-offseason The Wild and Rossi shouldn't be having any trouble hammering out an extension. Rossi, an RFA turning 24 in September, recorded the second-most points on the team last season (60 in 82 games). The smart, skilled, highly competitive 5-foot-9 Austrian is a homegrown top-six center. Minnesota has $10 million in cap space and no other significant spots to fill to finalize its 2025-26 roster. Problems lurk below the surface, however. Coach John Hynes demoted Rossi to the fourth line in the playoffs, dropping his nightly usage from 18 minutes in the regular season to 11 in the first-round series loss to Vegas. GM Bill Guerin's top to-do list item at the moment is to lock up Kirill Kaprizov. The superstar winger, who's been eligible for an extension since July 1, is due for Leon Draisaitl-type money (around $14 million average annual value) starting in 2026-27. Guerin has said there's no rush to sign, trade, or match an offer sheet for Rossi. If he stays, a short-term extension makes sense, since it gives both player and team flexibility. If he leaves, a trade is far more likely than an offer sheet. Half of the league could use a second-line center, and Rossi still has upside. The Hurricanes desperately need to upgrade at 2C (Jesperi Kotkaniemi isn't going to cut it) and have plenty of cap space. Ditto for the Sabres, who picked Jack Quinn one spot before Rossi went to the Wild in the 2020 draft. Mammoth bench boss Andre Tourigny coached Rossi in junior, and they don't have as much wiggle room, but trading top-six winger Nick Schmaltz (plus a pick) could make the math work. Guerin wants to make a so-called "hockey trade" here.
