Never Seen D.G. Like This

I'm glad to see he had a hard time at the podium. That means it hurt him. And it would only hurt if he cared about both Hardy and the team. If it was just Hardy he cared about, he'd be his agent. If he just cared about the team, he'd have been calm and look relieved at the podium that this was over. But he looked wounded that he had to this, and that shows he cares. Caring earns respect, and because he cares about the team and it's players like that, I'm sure the players respect him even more. I know I do.

Gettleman's national reputation, and the national reputation of the franchise he manages just took a pounding. Of course he's having a hard time.

This is what I believe went down.  Nothing but speculation on my part.

Hardy is innocent right now.  The Panthers believed he will be found innocent during his trail.  Therefore he can play.

Ray Rice tape hits.

Jerry Richardson thinks Hardy is innocent or he thinks the rule of law should take precident.  Innocent until proven guilty.  Is going to let him play and doesn't care what the media mob thinks.  He's going to do what he thinks is the right thing to do.

Media turns up the heat and it'sa full blown angry mob.

NFL says they are going to suspend Hardy so the Panthers go ahead take Hardy off the team.  It looks a whole lot better if the Panthers do it instead of the league coming in and doing it.  The other way makes it look like the Panthers are trying to defend an abuser while the NFL is trying to fix the problem when really it's a different situation and Jerry wants an innocent man to have his day in court and not let the media decide what happens.

So, the Panthers didn't have a choice.  And we'll never hear this story because Jerry will never say a bad remark about the NFL.

Maybe Ron will write a tell all book after we win the Superbowl.

Keep in mind that during Cam's press conference yesterday, Cam's first press conference after Hardy's leave with pay, Cam was in very good spirits:

David Newton @DNewtonespn

This is the best mood I've seen Cam Newton in this season.

Kelli Bartik @ KelliBartik

Cam's in a good mood today...

And when Rivera was asked yesterday about how the whole team felt in their first practice after finding out about Hardy's leave with pay, the whole team seems to be in good spirits:

Kelli Bartik @ KelliBartik

Rivera asked about day after Hardy decision: Loved the energy/tempo at today's practice, for me personally, It was a deep breath.

So it sounds like Hardy's leave with pay had a positive effect on both Cam and the whole team. Either because Hardy was a negative distraction in general, or because Hardy was a negative distraction with his whole current situation

I think he just looked like a guy who isn't allowed to say what he really wants to say and has to toe the line for the NFL and society in general and it's really hard to contain your words and say the right things. DG is an emotional man and he just looked frustrated because everyone knows he can't really answer the questions but the reporters have to ask anyway.

Side note : Dave needs to take better care of himself. He has a really stressful job and he seems to take everything to heart. He's a self described "grinder." Those "type A" personalities combined with poor sleep schedules and laptop sized cookies can equate to heart attacks at his age. (Not sure if he smokes, but that increases the risk factor considerably.)

Rep within the league is just fine. He's a known personae from his years with Buffalo and the Giants, and hasn't been a dick about finally getting his chance to be a GM. As far as public image, he's at his line in the sand. If the public wants Hardy's contract terminated, he'll have the chutzpah to tell them they'll have to wait for the November trial or a written contract and guaranteed lien for roughly $200 million to pay for Hardy and the NFLPA's wrongful termination lawsuit. He could probably care less what the public thinks, since he spends all that time evaluating players.

Our national rep is laughable. Most Americans confuse my Sam Mills jersey for Jacksonville, and only remember Rae Carruth. Hell our Super Bowl is more famous for the Janet Jackson halftime nip slip.

It's ok. Rest of Merika don't mean jack poo. We winning the whole fuggin thing this year.

Hardy is getting paid a million dollars week. I seriously doubt our GM feels sorry for him. Most likely he is sorry the Panthers ever drafted Hardy in the first place.

I don't get that from him at all.  Money isn't everything to everyone.  Hardy's desire to get paid is well known, but he also seems to genuinely love playing football.  Our GM could very well feel sorry that Hardy isn't getting to do what he enjoys but he almost definitely feels sorry for Hardy having to go through this BS, having his name dragged through the mud by some gold digger.  I would be very shocked if Gettleman "feels sorry the Panthers ever drafted Hardy".  Young people make mistakes, 20something year olds are rarely the best judges of character and when a pretty young thang has her mind set on manipulating someone with newfound fame and money, a guys judgement can get even more cloudy.

They were forced by the NFL to place him on the exempt list : that wasn't his call and he was never going to since this whole thing smells funny.

Anyway for people to stop calling for godells head and thanks to us looking vulnerable ( the whole big cat crying thing sent a bad message that we could be swayed unlike San Fran ) anyway Getts is the man and he knows his poo

Gettleman isn't upset, he's pissed off just like Rivera. This wasn't their decision or Hardy's. The NFL made them do this, and if they hadn't the NFL would've suspended Hardy indefinitely without pay.

First, it obviously hurts the team from a football stance. Hardy is a top 5 or so player on the team and a crucial piece of the defense. Secondly, and more importantly, he's probably concerned about Hardy as a person. The media has ruined his name.

I'm sure he's also not happy about the way he's being portrayed either.

Y'all read way too damn much into crap.

Most telling part of the interview was:

"Was suspension another option?" (In regards to Hardy taking the option of this voluntary leave)

Gettleman sighs heavily, looks visibly distraught (at the situation, not the question), takes a few moments,

"Not from us.  Not from us."

Reading between the lines, which isn't something I normally like to do but it seems very apparent to me in this case, Gettleman seems to feel this is all BS and Hardy is getting effed in the a.  One also might could draw conclusions as to Gettleman's feelings on Hardy's innocence in the legal matter from his reply (which would obviously have implications with regards to Hardy's future here).

Yep.

The thing I got from watching that video is that Gettleman was having to watch his words very carefully.  He had the look of a man who wasn't able to say what he really wanted to.  That particular question was the clearest example of it.

Rivera, on the other hand, had a look of barely contained fury, and the wall holding it back was obviously starting to crumble before it was all over.  When he stopped to tell Charlie Dayton he was okay and then abruptly stepped away, only to return for a quick injury rundown and then step away again, it was surreal.

I'd guess Gettleman's emotions were probably similar to Rivera's, but he did a better job of containing them.  I wouldn't have wanted to be in Ron's way after that.

this is one of the reasons i am in love with the 2014 Panthers. they are taking adversity in stride and using it as motivation to win games.

side note: i wonder what the chances are that the Panthers hire a press guy simply to talk to the media in place of the GM/HC
