Cam v. Luck - The "Build Around" Philosophy

Ruff

Recommended Posts

So, since the Colts played on Thursday night last night, we all got to hear about how amazing Andrew Luck is, and how he's the best young QB of all time, and how there was even debates if he's the best QB alive right now (hint: he's not). I, however, am on the ship that thinks Cam is a better QB Luck, he just hasn't had the weapons put around him that Luck has had. Now, let's look at the draft picks since they both came into the league (note: I'm using the drafts they were drafted in, because the teams knew they were building around their players immediately).

Andrew Luck - 1st Pick Overall, 2012

Since then:

2012

Coby Fleener, TE

Dwayne Allen, TE

TY Hilton, WR

Vick Ballard, RB

LaVon Brazill, WR

Justin Anderson, G

Chandler Harnish, QB

Offensive players selected / number of total picks: 7/9

2013

Hugh Thornton, G

Khaled Holmes, C

Kerwynn Williams, RB

Justice Cunningham, TE

Offensive players selected / number of total picks: 4/7

2014

Jack Mewhort, T

Donte Moncrief, WR

Ulrick John, G

Offensive players selected / number of total picks: 3/5

Total offensive players selected since Luck / possible picks: 14/21 = 67%

Now, a look at Carolina

2011

Kealoha Pilares, WR

Zach Williams, C

Lee Ziemba, T

Offensive players selected / number of total picks: 3/7

2012

Amini Silatolu, G

Joe Adams, WR

Offensive players selected / number of total picks: 2/7

2013

Edmund Kugbila, G

Kenjon Barner, RB

Offensive players selected / number of total picks: 2/5

2014

Kelvin Benjamin, WR

Trai Turner, G

Tyler Gaffney, RB

Offensive players selected / number of total picks: 3/6

Total offensive players selected since Cam / possible picks: 10/25 = 40%

Less than half of our Draft picks since Cam has been drafted have been towards offensive, where as Luck is literally seeing 2/3 of the players selected by the Colts on the offensive side of the ball.

There's where the big difference comes from between Luck's production and Cam's production. Every Colts' game, you see guys like Allen and Hilton making huge plays, while we aren't even putting our franchise QB in a position to do well.

You're spanning two different GMs with the Panthers (Grigson joined the Colts the same year as Luck).

Hard to build a narrative given that fact.

Actually, it's not that much different. Both Hurney (in Cam's first 2 years) and Gettleman (Cam's second 2 years) have drafted exactly 5 offensive players each. Hurney draft 3 OL and 2 WR, Gettleman drafted 2 OL, 2 RB, and 1 WR. The numbers are closer than you think.

EDIT: Also both have shared a coaching staff, which can go a long ways in building the same team... Or, a team in the same way.

Yeah we haven't put as many pieces around him like we should which is not good. But Cam does have a better defense to fall back on than Luck.

Not if you're counting this year (as of now). The Colts have had a pretty damn good defense this year, better than the Panthers at the moment. Albeit, they have played some cupcakes.

You're talking about two guys with entirely different qualifications, backgrounds and (most important) philosophies, though.

There's nothing whatsoever to indicate that Gentleman had any intentions of continuing Marty Hurney's plans.

This is evidenced in part by his own statements, but perhaps even more so by the fact that there's little evidence Marty Hurney actually had plans.

Kinda hard to build for the future when youre stuck paying for the past..

And Somehow its gettlemans fault.

I know you're #1 Gettleman Fanboi, but I'm actually not saying it's his fault. I'm saying it's partly fault for everyone involved. The coaching staff, the front office (both of the regimes), the owner, etc. Cam needs to have more weapons. It's as simple as that.

Except, there's already evidence to support the contrary. Sorry Mr. Scot.

before last night, of his 14 td passes, only 3 went to a wr.  he is racking up 2-5 yard touchdown passes to his backs and te's and inflating his stats.  that said, he still throws nice intermediate and deep balls and moves remarkably well in the pocket.

Inflating his stats? So a TD should not count because it was by a RB? No one here complains when Olsen is catching TDs from Cam.

    • You honestly think Tampa would have traded down with a division rival so their rival could land a “generational player” at a massive position of need for TB?   bruh
    • Ya'll better quit throwing shots at Zod. He'll come in here and ban everybody. I had a friend @prosource who was banned in 2015 because he said some very minor things about Zod being an ass to the posters on the main forum after starting the All-Pro one. He said he felt like another level is cool, but don't punch down on people that don't want All-Pro. (He did say that it wasn't going to last long anyways.🤔) I distinctly remember him calling and being like "dude, I got banned, my profile says I don't have access to the Huddle!") I feel like once Tepper came in and cut off all unofficial access to the team, Zod was going to be around less. The All-Pro board had really good photos, even in game stuff, and I remember seeing him behind a little fenced in area at Wofford for non team sanctioned press/photographers after Tepper bought the team. I knew then his ego wouldn't allow him to continue with past fervency and effort with that reduction in access. Dude was literally in the locker room when JR was owner.  I came over in 2011 immediately after finding out this place existed. I was super involved with the Charlotte forum, and fell off after its demise. I will never forget arguing Pep over Ryan Sims on that forum! Who is Ryan Sims some of you may ask? My answer is exactly!
    • And not see him running free. Because has been free a lot more than he gets credit for.    Now what XL does with that when he does see the ball, is on him.
