Is this the least Talented Defensive Unit in the NFL?

NO

This team without Hardy and a weakened Secondary from last year should've dropped from Top 2 Defense to Middle of the Pack in the NFL.  Instead they have become the worst Defense in the NFL and its not even close, while having plenty of talent on the roster.

They started the Season well but then the National Media poo storm happened and Richardson and Rivera threw Hardy off the team effectively.  Since that moment, this Defense has not looked the same while they have the talent to at least be middle of the road Defensive Unit.

We need better players in the secondary, but that alone is not why this is now the worst Defensive Unit in the NFL.

I think it might be scheme based. There comes a time when the same ol cover 2 no longer works.

I've also noticed it in Tampa. Lovie's tampa 2 is getting picked apart.

Maybe offenses just know how to beat it?

Problem when we run man we get beat as well because we don't have the talent to run it.

I think we play a lot cover 3 as well. Which is a scheme that protects against deep routes, but it's weakness is intermediate sidelines and short passes.

The thing is, it's not really long plays that are beating us (in the passing game) I think the one to Nelson today was the longest of the year. Teams are marching down the field on us, and it's not just Rogers, it's Flaco and Dalton and Big Ben and Cutler. Not to mention Stafford looked pretty good too its just that the Lions self destructed like they always do.

I just have a hard time believing it's the players, not when you get beat like this over and over. It has to be scheme. To go from #2 defense to #32, that has to be a scheme issue right? Maybe I play too much madden.

We're one of them.

Bad DL. So-so against the run and no pressure to speak of. Short is the only guy who looks anything near above average. I really, really hope Star is having a soph slump, because he's been JAG all year.

One good LB. TD is missing a lot of tackles/plays. Blackburn/Klein is about as meh as can be.

Easily the worst secondary in the league. Cason is pretty bad, Godfrey needs to be launched into the sun, DeCoud is afraid of contact and is just Downy-soft all around. Harper is garbage. The entire unit is molasses-slow and flat out can't run or recover outside of maybe DeCoud.

    • You are right--it was DC.  I remember talking to him at Belk in Albemarle one day--the Panthers were on a bye and they were (at the time) a disapointing 4-4.  I mentioned that the record was disappointing and he seemed to get a bit annoyed.  He dId not say anything.  I trying to suggest that we will get better, but I think he was pretty upset about it.  No hard feelings, but the man was simply trying to shop with his wife and this annoying jerk starts making comments about his job---I get it.  I apologized, telling him that I was trying to be supportive and not critical--he did not think it was a big deal.  I'd see him at events from time to time-he'd wave or say hi, but it was awkward for me.  Figured I would say something stupid.  Jordan was pretty popular--nothing like she seems to be now--she is holding her own in a man's world...proud of her.
    • Like we have had the last 3 years.
    • In May of 2026, it looks like a challenging schedule...and it probably is.  I rarely listen to the "strength of schedule" conversations that light up social media this time of year. Each year teams improve and decline. I think there's chunks of the year we need to take care of business and the week 5 bye is not desired.  I do think if we don't hit the bye week at 3-1, it's going to be a major uphill battle given the schedule in front of us. This season falls on three people, regardless of schedule strength: Canales, Bryce, Evero.  Canales: Finally can truly coach all aspects of the team and not focus with gameday prep for OC duties anymore. He drives the bus and needs to get these guys in position to win each week. There's no way vets come in and put it on the line every week to watch our QB sh!t the bed (See: SF game last year). Bryce: Despite everyone's obsession with thinking Bryce is a guaranteed extension, I think this year will truly be his "prove it" year. If he comes out the way he has the past three years, I really don't see how vets and coaches can continue to put him under center long-term. He might play out that fifth year as the starter, but I think next offseason his long-term replacement is found. I also think there's no excuses with the weapons and commitment we've made on offense to insulate him with every possible weapon.  Evero: Best personnel he's had since he's been here...no excuses. Figure out how to blitz effectively. Figure out how to use CBs whose strengths are press/man. Figure out how to utilize a talented front-7 to get the hell of the field. Outside of FS and maybe....maybe ILB, there are few weaknesses on this unit.
