Why did it take an injury for Norwell to play?

To my eyes Norwell may be the best guard on the team currently. My question is, why wasn't this known week's ago? Norwell was not even active on Sundays until injury forced the coaches hand.

Practices are also for evaluating talent, yes? Do you trust their ability to do so effectively?

I mean there are certainly things that coaches see that even the most diehard, knowledgeable football fans don't... we're not at every practice, in the film rooms, interacting with these guys...

Having said that, some things (like this one and the Bell situation) look pretty obvious to everyone...  I don't have an answer, but I would like to hear someone closer to the staff, like Bill Voth for instance, take on it.

No I do not. Rivera likes to play favorites. He should've been starting all along. Amini had no business starting to begin with. Even though Norwell is solid at guard, I think Velasco and Turner is good inside. I think with Norwell at RT our line would've been better from the beginning. Norwell is such a great utility tool we can plug him in anywhere. You can sit Velasco for him if you want to keep him at guard, but I think for overall improvement on the line he should be at RT.

    • Ultimately it's up to the other safety prospects to clearly outplay Scott. I think when that happens on tape against other teams it'll be addressed. I think none of them have done that definitively and consistently yet.
    • Night and day difference in the front office investements.  Since Morgan has been in the FO (5 years)....4 out of 5 first round picks have been offensive players.  The one defensive pick was a corner. Expand it out to the first 2 rounds? 7 out of the 9 picks have been offensive.  That IMO is why our D sucks so bad.   You build defenses up front.   Carolina hasn't been investing there.  Ron's first 5 years? 3 of the 5 first round picks were defensive players.  Expand it all to include second rounders  7 of the 10 picks were defensive.  All front 7 players.
    • I think he gets this year to show what he can do.  Last year, we had a lot of injuries. This year, we should have some players, even if we lose one or two.  It's the first preseason game.  Some of the starters weren't even in it.  There is no scheming or game planning.  Let's see how guys do when it counts. I think we have a GM that knows a thing or two about defense.  Let it play out.
