Greg Cosell talks Cam and the Saints game

Johnny Rockets

I don't think anyone is asking that you move on from him. I think Cam is a competitor and can fix those problems. He just has to work harder.

Dave Gettleman may not see it that way.  Like Cosell said, it's Cam's fourth year

It's too bad that Cam has allowed the seeds of doubt to creep back in.  Cam works very hard and wants to win.  I think that he needs to work on his mindset.

In terms of passing I think you could easily argue he's had more stinky games than amazing. But the majority of his performances are above average.

Within a single game there are up and down moments. He will look great then just have a wild pitch. But he's never been good at the subtleties. Things like hitting a guy in stride. Putting the ball where only his guy can get it. Making the right read. I felt like he turned the corner early in the season. Maybe there is some truth when Cam said he gets tired from running. Maybe he can't be as accurate when he ran for 20 yards the play before.

i think this is the problem.

and why people like CRA are stressing for a real running game, Cam excluded

i will say that almost all QBs have bad throws during a game. that happens even to the greats. and i've seen Cam hit guys in stride plenty of times. Especially during that great 4 game stretch he had. He can always be better though.

Basic common sense will tell you that this offense is simply not built to score a touchdown every drive.

Who builds an offense that does not intend to score on every drive? If that's the case, at least score on your second drive, or third drive. It comes down to execution. If you can't convert your downs you're not scoring.

I just don't get why the defense alone gets the blame when the offense could have been scoring on their possessions like GB was

Favre was like that right up till he retired (both times).

Nobody builds on offense with the intent of "not scoring every drive". What are you even arguing with me about here?

If we want to score more consistently on offense, we need some speed, period.

I wasn't blaming the defense alone.

Part of our big problem is we get one game where the offense is actually clicking, but the D looks lost. Then we get a game where the offense looks lost, but the D is clicking. Why does this happen? Is it all execution? Is it a poor gameplan? Lack of adjustments? It's a combination.

I was honestly surprised when I heard Ron talk about how much more Cam was getting involved in the offense from the mental side of things due to his injury. Maybe disappointed cos I thought he's always wanted to be better. I think he's reverting to just trying to rely on his athletism and that's why he's making bad decisions after he's started running.

Speed would definitely help no doubt. Maybe DCs are adjusting to our game and we haven't been able to figure it out.

Common sense tells me the coaches are spending more time on the run game in practice than the passing game. I would not doubt it is a considerable difference.

You spend the off season and preseason game planning your strengths and developing your weaknesses. When the season is in play you devote a majority of practice to your strengths and game plan around your weaknesses.

Look into it. Going to be a coaching issue during the week flowing into game day. You can tell when the coaches regurgitate the same first half game plan that focuses on the OL and running game carrying the offense - the weaknesses.

And Shula sets himself up for failure with a rigid 50/50 split with plays in the first half. Teams that win go pass heavy in the first half and balance it back to 50% in the second half with the run. The Panthers wins this season have been pass heavy with the Panthers strengths this season. The more they go to the OL and run game in the first half, the more the Panthers lose control of the game.

Seems the coaches are coaching with their gut more than their head. Would be better off flipping a coin to decide what play to run if all you are worried about is a 50/50 play call split.

With what we have at WR, our offense is more about getting first downs than huge plays obviously. The problem is though, our OC doesn't know which he wants us to be. For example, it's 2nd and 5, instead of going for the first down, we throw a bomb downfield. Incompletion.

Yes, and that is one of our bigger problems, which you could even argue negates any weaknesses we have personnel wise.

If your coaches are simply unable to adjust, then it really doesn't matter who is out there. The players also have to believe in the gameplan, and when our gameplan week in and week out is clearly not working yet we keep trying, eventually the players are going to lose confidence.

Cam always says all the right things, but you can't tell me that he doesn't look around at his teammates when he's in the huddle and think, "Holy fug, how in the hell is this supposed to work."

Cam's accuracy has been erratic his entire career. He's had some amazing games, he's had some crap games, and he's had several up and down games. That's inconsistent. As a passer that is.

Which is why I am content that this is always going to be Cam. Throw out some absolutely amazing games but then throw out a clunker the next. WAY too inconsistent as a passer to ever be able to consistently win, hence his career record. This is why i am so against paying Cam what he is going to be asking for. You don't pay an inconsistent QB that kind of money.

that would be a pretty sad attitude for a player looking to get paid more than anyone else in the history of the game. people who get paid that type of money make up the difference. i dont at all believe that is his attitude.

    • I have different  opinion on what is a big time throw. Some of those CJ throws the receiver is running wide open, one of them he completely under throws.
    • agreed, which is why if Bryce gets his poo together the division is for the taking. Even with Bryce sucking we were in every NFC South game last year   yep, a tortured longtime Hornets and Panthers fan
