Hail Mary or a 63 yard field goal?

I don't know why Rivera didn't punt and get the Falcons to use their last time out since that seemed to be the game plan for today.

You have the ultimate jump ball receiver in KB but we decide to go with the kicker that missed just minutes before. I'd go for the Hail Mary at that distance every day.

Field goal. There have been a few 63 yard field goals made in recent years. When was the last time there was a successful Hail Mary in the NFL? Keep in mind Jimmy Graham's Hail Mary last week was completely unsuccessful because he wouldn't have caught it in a million years if he hadn't flung the 49er to the ground.

 

There have only been 3 63 yard field goals in recent years and 2 came at Mile High, like I said a place where it is very easy to kick.

 

There was just a successful Hail Mary last season that gave Cincy the win (well tied the game to send it into OT).  Happened twice in 2012.

The problem with a Hail Mary is that we would have to have our O-Line protect Cam for 10+ seconds for our slow receivers to get near the endzone.

Oh, the irony.  2012 @ Chicago we throw a hail mary at the end of the first half instead of attempting the kick from 50 yards.  We lose by 1 point.

Very few kickers maybe but Gano has the leg to do it. I think that was right call

If it were any team but the Panthers a hail mary would have a great chance of drawing a PI. But refs were already cheating us out of the PI calls all game. Plus Gano would have made that kick if it wasn't blocked. He's got a hell of a leg.

Gano has made 63 yarders in training camp (with room to spare). He definitely has the leg.

However, doing so in an actual game with a defense coming at you with everything they've got is a little different.

Which is the higher percentage play? Very few kickers have the ability to drill the ball 60+ yards with accuracy, plus Gano had just missed from 25 yards closer. 

 

On the other hand, you throw a hail mary to KB, and maybe you get PI, or maybe KB comes down with it. 

 

I know hindsight is 20 20 but what is the right call?

 

In the past decade, there were 982 drives ending on  a play from  the opponents 45 or farther.

 

204 went for a touchdown on passes, laterals, or runs.

3 were successful field goals.

 

Odds favor doing anything but kicking a FG in that situation.

 

For fun, 224 of those drives were from exactly the opponents 45 yard line.

2 Field goals

To be fair coaches only attempted 5 FGs

 

Either way the Panthers need a coaching staff that wants to build around Cam and let Cam be Cam. Not a game manager. What a waste.

 

I understand managing the game at times, but when you need to counter with a game changing drive you must be able to call your players number. Not wait until you are down 3 scores or the game is out of reach.
