Norwell and Remmer

Every week since these two players started play all I have heard is positive comments. How well they have played and it shows on the field.

I would assume over a course of a season teams get tape on these guys and find their weakness. This might be the case with Norwell and Remmer but IMO I think they will be starters for a while.

Which brings me to the point of my post.

How in the hell do two solid players get overlooked in the draft and/or shuffled between teams without ever making it to the field. God knows what we would have done if Chandler and Amini didn't get hurt. I don't normally watch the offensive line during live play. Usually I see the good and bad on replay but when I see Norwell pulling it looks like a freight train off the tracks. Who misses talent like this. Why is a player like this stuck behind a player that has lost his edge. (I remember a time where everyone love Amini) Why is Rivera pulling a Fox.

And Remmer baffles me more. This guy has been in just about ever division of the NFL. Was he behind a Pro Bowler? I am happy we have him. Maybe he realizes his chances are running out and he finally gets it.

It makes me wonder. How many more good players are stuck on a roster and they are better than the player that is in front of them.

I am happy we have them and hopefully they continue to perform well and give us options that one month ago we didn't have. If these guys are going to hang around Gettleman can focus on a LT and Safety instead of find protection for Cam. Finding depth which will be nice instead of starting.

Numerous reasons, not sure which apply to these guys though:

Off field issues

Poor combine/individual workouts

Bad at practice

Don't stand out on film

undersized

Not from a power Conference

Immaturity

Late Bloomers

Screwing the coach's wife/daughter

Blackmail

Love this one

Some guys just have to wait their turn. Not every player scouted , drafted, or signed is a high priority to the team. May just be a situation where teams were rolling with other players first before Norwell/Remmera got their chance

For these guys its a few things; practice being the biggest. If you practice awful, don't do what the coach wants, or show improvement.... well its very very hard to get snaps.

Another is numbers game. This is a far reaching issue and its able to cover many different areas. Combine numbers. Coach/scout-"if norwell doesn't run a 7.65 crone drill, I don't want him"(I use that cause I read a good piece on finding OL by using crone drill). If a player doesn't fit a certain mold, he isn't given the same chances as one that does.

Niether of these guys where drafted. Armini was a low 2nd, that's a huge team investment. People also forget how bad jordan gross played like with armini next to him. Once wharton replaced him, gross looked like a probowler, night and day difference. Bell has played better with norwell too. Which brings me to the odd part of OLmen "clicking". It happens in life, you're working with a new group of people to solve a problem. Someone can say something and you can finish their statement. suddenly another teammate can cover up your weakness while you remain strong. Etc etc. Some brillant people work well with this group, but put them on another and its a disaster.

Ive called out kalil for being overpaid by a few million, but he's done a great job being a leader of this young group. That's the other issue, age/exp. Remmers and norwell are young and didn't have barely any live pro game snaps. Its more risky to play a young player over a vet, even if the young player is "better". Say you don't believe in remmers/norwell and put them out there anyways. First play norwell makes a huge mistake, causing a biltzing LB to light up cam and causes a fumble. Cam doesn't get up....... afterwards he's placed on IR. Rip season and your job.

Remmer maybe but Norwell is from Ohio St. was starter all 4 years (I believe)

Even after his time on the line word was Amini was going to start when he came back. How insane was that. I could not believe when I heard that.

Whatever, the reason I am happy we have them. I can only believe they will continue to improve with more playing time.

Nice post, pie for you kind sir.

In a related note...I have always thought...if Bledsoe never got hurt...we would have a Lombardi.  You can't convince me otherwise.

    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
    • Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
