Is Dave Gettelmen already the best GM in the south? ?

WOW!!

If anything, DG strikes me as very disciplined to his approach of team building. To the fans it might be quite frustrating at times but I think it will be beneficial in the long term.

This is the part that the Gman haters don't understand. Temptations exist but its about whether you have the discipline to do what is best, & not what will just taste good for the moment. He knows where he wants us to be culture-wise, cap-wise, & otherwise. It's not always so easy(depending on the situation) to reach that vision. But let's give him a chance to get us there before we pull out pitchforks. I know next to nothing about being a Gm, but I see that he has a vision and you can tell by his discipline. It's been frustrating, but first time back to back champions is a hell of a good sign to me.

Yep, Ron and his disastrous personnel decisions. It was all Ron who shipped off players that led to a 12-4 season, and got all those free agent signings. Gettleman had nothing to do with that awful offseason he kept striking out week after week.

The players that get cut or benched; that is coaching. The players that get signed; that is the front office.

And all those horrible coaching decisions were probably Gettleman, right?

And Ron was forced to start those guys. Those were the guys he was given. He had to coach up the rookies and get them up to speed quickly so he could toss the garbage he was handed.

Harper, Cason, DeCoud, Avant, Bell, Chandler, Godfrey, Dickson and no return man can all be credited to Gettleman. Gettleman loves himself a project and a bargain bin free agent. That is the difference between a 10+ win season and a losing season.

Cam Newton, Derek Anderson, Greg Olsen, Ryan Kalil, Jonathan Stewart, Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, Charles Johnson, Greg Hardy, and Josh Norman are the factors that led to the 7 wins in 2014. Get rid of them and replace them with draft picks, udfas, bargain bin free agents, and projects you would be lucky to leave the season with 2 wins.

It's laughable how little you know about football.

The only move of Gettleman's I am unhappy with was the treatment of Steve Smith.  I don't doubt the wisdom of letting him go, but the way in which it was handled was, imo, atrocious.  I realize football is a business and I am enormously happy with Gettleman's moves, overall, so this is not some "FIRE GETTELMAN" rant.  This is just me wishing that Smitty - who I think gave a lot to the team over the years, and was one of the greatest Panthers of all time - had been treated better on his way out.

First: Hardy?   The hell does he have to do with Gettleman this year?

KB, Short, Ealy, Bene, Turner, Norwell are all big parts of our last 4 wins.  Quite a bit unfair to lump a bunch of Panthers-when-Gman-arrived as his fault for staying Panthers.

Gettleman could never have kept Lafell, Ginn, Mitchell, Captain... They all wanted - and got - more money.  We were in cap hell.  Those players were playing for cheap precisely to get a chance to rebound their careers and get a bit contract, so when they did, it is no surprise they left.  The fact that Gettleman GOT Ginn, Mitchell to come here, Captain to play for cheaper... he's a major reason we had 12 wins last year.  He deserves some of the blame for the 7 wins this year, but he knew it'd happen and he told fans the team would regress.  Yet we are in the playoffs again, because of a late season push in which the rookies he signed/drafted have been absolutely instrumental.

Gettleman signed who he could.  He did what he could, given our salary.  He is not perfect, but he is certainly a good GM overall or at least a good talent evaluator the last couple years.  I think it may be too early to declare him a great GM.  But he is certainly looking it.

Realistically though, was there ever a real possibility of Smith not being angry about being let go (no matter how politely they told him)?

That's not the point.  Steve Smith basically found out through the media, and that is not cool.  I can understand Smitty being upset and pissed, that is basically who he is.

I'll grant it could have gone better, but Smitty being who he is, there was never a real possibility that he was gonna go quietly.

Gettleman is the best and it's not even close.

Bucs- Where to start? They drafted Mark Baron in the top 10, several picks ahead of Kuechly, only to let him go last year.

Falcons - Unable to get it done after betting the house on Julio. Their window has closed, culminating in Mike Smith's firing.

Saints - Had a nice run with Brees in his prime, but that time is over. Made huge mistakes in past offseasons, letting Sproles go, signing Jarius Byrd, hiring Rob Ryan as DC...not to mention BountyGate.

The Bucs just could never find their guy at QB. Other than that, they've been pretty solid in my opinion. Unfortunately, without a competent QB not much else really matters.

Falcons went all in on offensive skill positions. I think that says it all. Team built for the regular season, not for the hard hitting, harsh weather conditions of the playoffs.

Saints are still a good team. I think they screwed the pooch with Ryan. His defenses are usually only good for a season or two. I know one thing though, somebody better start grooming a replacement for Brees or they could be the Bucs in a couple of seasons.
