What does Gettleman do about Cam

And that's just it in a nutshell.

Some people don't think rationally about how hard it is to find an upper tier QB in this league. Maybe Cam is in the top 5 in a year or so, or maybe he stays in the 5 to 12 range. Either way, those guys are very hard to find.

Look at who's left in the playoffs. Brady, Rodgers, Wilson and Luck. Guys like that don't grow on trees. Maybe Cam belongs in that group or maybe he is somewhere outside of it. But he's someone to build around, and someone we can win with.

The whole argument of "well, we're going to play hardball and if he doesn't sign, we'll just trade him away for picks and find our next QB" is incredibly naive. We'll end up with the next RGIII or Geno Smith or we'll go the vet route and end up with what Tampa had this year.

Is that really what you want?

Yeah. There are a lot of people that make the stretch from "Not as good as Rodgers and Brady" to "a dime a dozen QB that is easily replaced"

Going into this season, Cam Newton was ranked as the16th best QB in the league by a large sample of NFL GM's and scouts.

Of course, all those GM's and scouts are "fuging idiots"...

Huddle says so...it must be true...

So here the question I pose. Where did Cam rank this season? I'm not all about bashing Cam. I seen him will this team's to wins. My issue is his progression. To me he took a step back this year. So I'm Leary of the Panthers giving him a big contract. He won't be able to use his legs forever. That and his injuries give me concern. If he can become a realible passer. I would have no issues.

Starting to get the distinct impression many here are living vicariously through Cam and won't feel good about themselves unless he receives a top tier contract from the Panthers.

Too bad, because I'm living vicariously through Dave Gettleman and will feel lousy unless he gets the best deal possible for the Panthers.

I've got news for you guys.

When it is all said and done, somebody is going to be vicariously disappointed and it's not going to be me.

Well, you probably already know this, but Newton finished 26th in NFL passer rating and 29th in completion percentage.

Incidentally, he has never finished higher than 15th in NFL passer rating his entire career.

His mobility gives him a slight edge over other QB's who have nearly the same stats, but at the end of the day most NFL GM's coaches and media types don't believe that can continue on a long term basis.

But where Newton really fails is the eye test. He has glaring flaws as a QB that have been masked somewhat by his mobility, but these flaws have not gone away...indeed some of them seem to have grown.

No need to rehash those here...they are well known...but just to mention the tip of the iceberg, when have you ever heard a GM and a head coach talk about their QB's inconsistent fundamentals heading into his 5th full year as a starter???...I can't ever recall hearing anything like it concerning a player who has started 65 NFL games...

Been busy with work and traveling

Ah, that's good, I was concerned.

At the end of the day, what do rankings mean without postseason success?

Newton lit the league up yardage wise his rookie year, and we had a top ranked offense. Where did we end up again? With a losing record. Our offense right now is not built for Cam to put up gawdy numbers every game. Not without some more speed at WR at least.

Yes Newton looked inconsistent last season, but if you want to have that discussion, you cannot have it without including all the factors. We picked the absolute worst time to gut our WR core. Newton having offseason surgery, the rib injury, the back injury, terrible timing clearly.

When you combine that with the OL situation at the beginning of the season, that's a recipe for disaster for any quarterback.

Yet Newton still finished with 27 total touchdowns and over 4,000 yards of total offense, while missing 2 games.

If someone doesn't know enough about Cam by now after 4 years to believe that he will be putting in work this offseason, I don't even know what to tell them, they are beyond reasoning with. We know what he has to work on, and so does he, as he has plainly talked about.

Agreed.  I have never seen so many "fans" clamor and raise hell wanting their team to make a player one of the highest in the league.

Most would love a discount price, so we can chase some trophy's.....nope.

And, who was the QB having to deal with all those 2nd hand players you mentioned? That alone defeat your argument.

You are calling them second-hand players?  They were 5-1.

Defense--Glanton, Boston, Benwikere, Byndum

Offense-Norwell, Turner, Benjamin, Remmers, Brown, Whittaker

Who are the "second-hand" players you blame for the QB's shortcomings?  Please list them below, and how each impacted the QB play in a negative way:

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

7.

Wouldn't surprise me if most of these wannabe billionaires who are clamoring for Cam to be paid whatever he wants are shopping at the Dollar Store because Walmart is too expensive.
