The biggest concern with Ron that surprisingly no one ever talks about.

How many times were we in 4th and short and behind in score at the time, that we didn't go for it. I can think of several times we did go for it including once again Seattle. I just don't know how many times we didn't. That would go a long way to determine whether the OP has a legitimate concern or is whining and complaining without reason.

It's like you blacked out on pbr and forgot what happened after we went for on 4th and 1 and got it

From what I remember, in Cam's first 2 years, he snuck the ball on 4th and 1s and got goal-line carries for TDs, did very well for me in fantasy that way.

Then in 2013 we added Tolbert to reduce the pounding Cam took on those plays. Tolbert got some of the 4th and 1 carries, and vultured some of Cam's TDs.

Cue 2014, Gross and Wharton retire so O-Line gets shakier, Cam has ankle surgery and then gets broken ribs in pre-season, Tolbert gets hurt week 3 or 4 and goes on IR w/ return in week 11 or 12.

No wonder we didn't go for it on 4th down more and also our Red-Zone production fell off the cliff mid-season.

i don't care about that as much as i care about his lack of ability to assess talent in players and coaches and his truly

astounding amateur aptitude for clock management four years into his tenure as a head coach.

I wholeheartedly agree about the clock management.

As for his ability to assess players and coaches, I believe that he and G-man are probably correct in their assertion that it takes time for youngsters to develop. We'll never know, but it could have hindered some of these guys' development if we had thrown them to the wolves too early. We also may have even missed the playoffs. Ron had to play the hand that he was dealt, and it wasn't easy. I can't in good conscious second guess that part of his job because I don't have nearly enough specific information. G-man was pleased though, so I assume Ron did a helluva job in regards to getting his personnel ready for that playoff run.

Without Mike Tolbert, the only true fullback on the team,A banged up Cam Newton,An OL that earlyon was the worst in the league, yes,I can see why Ron Rivera  wasn't all to anxious to go for it on fourth down. Plus, like pantherclaw stated, there weren't as many opportunities this year, compared to last year.

was the point not going for it enough or something else.

At that point in the game we had to push the envelope. The status quo wasn't working in the past games we had with Seattle. We are mirror images philosophy wise but they have better personnel. Go for six or bust. We were playing with house money and the players and coaches knew it. You could see it on their faces.

Ron should have been all over shula after the 4th was converted

    • Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.
    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
