Jon Beason as backup LB?

Rarely does every LB play special teams. You would want your backup MLB to be a solid rotation guy and could fill in the spot when needed to as he is the QB of the defense. Not a lot of those kinds of guys play Special Teams. We usually carry 8 LBs. Jacobs, Glanton, Riddick play special teams. We wouldn't need Beason to.

This is basically what I'm picturing:

SLB: Thomas Davis - Kevin Reddick

MLB: Luke Kuechly - Jon Beason - Ben Jacobs

WLB: A.J. Klein - Adarius Glanton

Klein could even play ST. So we have 4 LBs out of 7 that could play ST. If we draft a backup LB, you're looking at a rookie backing up Kuechly.

I think our best option is to draft an OLB and let Klein move to his more natural spot, MLB.

That plan actually doesn't sound too bad. I wouldn't be surprised if we pick an OLB in one of the top rounds to start and move Klein as the backup MLB. We could use outside help opposite of Davis and plus we should start looking anyway since Davis is up there in age and once he's gone both outside spots could be a weakness.

I agree that we need a good all around linebacker who could back up Luke. Let's be honest here, your middle linebacker is often your best athlete. Beason was a beast in his day and I would love to see him retire a Panther. But he wouldn't want to play backup as long as he thinks he should be a starter. And he will want more money than we will want to pay. So I doubt it would happen. I have his jersey hanging next to Jakes. Two great panthers whose careers were abruptly cut short due to career limiting injuries.
