Eagles and Bills: Major Trade

Mark S

Recommended Posts

Tbh the eagles didn't have many holes and LB was a major one for them to fill. With the 20th pick in this RB loaded draft they could easily replicate mccoys numbers with Sproles + rookie next year. This is a great move by the eagles.

They have major holes at safety, guard, WR if Maclin leaves, corner, d-line, QB and now RB as well. It COULD be a good move by them but right now Chip is putting way too much trust in his own system. McCoy carried that offense the past 2 years and now without him I doubt it has much success. McCoy is an ELITE RB and not one that could be replaced by Sproles or by some random rookie next year.

Well they now have 48 million in cap space to fill those holes.

Remember how that worked out for them when Vince Young said they'd be the dream team? The fella I replied to said they didn't have many holes, except that they do. Sure cap space can help with that I just honestly don't see them being very competitive next year.

To be fair Kiko had a great rookie season but suffered a torn ACL coming into this year. To top it off the Bills changed from a 3-4 to a 4-3 which didn't favor Kiko who played well as a 3-4 ILB. I'm torn on this trade, I think the contract and the fact McCoy has a ton of wear on his tires really hurts his positives but the Bills must have worried about Alonso's recovery or that he wasn't going to be able to play 4-3 WLB.

Overall it wouldn't surprise me if the Bills win this trade a year from now but right now it looks like they took it dry.

and more reactions from a Bills forum:

What a terrible trade this would be . Beyond shocked that this was even considered , no less possibly actually happening .

Chip Kelly just cashed in bigtime , he just dumped McCoy for one of the best young prospects at LB in the NFL and will then fill McCoys spot with Spiller or some other RB and won ' t miss a beat , in fact Philly just got better while we just added yet another back to a team filled with backs while losing a great young prospect at LB and to top it off sealed 1 st round pick Spillers fate here . We lose two players, this hurt the Bills , this was a bad, bad trade .

Why wouldn ' t you just draft a running back ?

Look at shadys contract . . . look at kikos contract. You could have offered Murray a tad less than the shady contract and he would have signed the first day of FA . Then for the same price you would have KiKo and Murray . So can anyone with a clear mind saying the trade makes sense ? Murray and KiKo are greater than having Shady . I hate Murray but . . . with eyes wide open . . . come on maaaaaan .

Lets see how good McCoy is without the threat of a passing game .

How is McCoy behind a **** ty line ? Still good right ?

does this move eat up 33 % of our cap space ? Please tell me Im reading this wrong.

people don ' t want to overpay for a good young pass rusher but THAT much on a rb ? kiko seemed to be our best shot at someone who could cover gronk !

I would hate it if this trade happened .

Wow . . . this is a tough one . McCoy is a hell of a back . . . talk about stopping on a dime . This guy is as elusive as it gets and is a fantastic pass catcher . On the other hand . . . his contract is enormous , and we gave up a good , young LB who is on a rookie deal . I ' m torn on this TBH . Guess time will tell how I feel on it . Hopefully Shady is a difference maker for at least 3 years.

we are one of the dumbest organizations ever

LeSean is a great RB. But he is 27 and has a lot of tread on the tires . Not a good combination for his productivity or longevity on the Bills. Maybe worst is his cap hit . We just lost a third of our cap space . I ' ll see how the rest of FA shakes out but this is a terrible start . Terrible.

so we trade for a soon to be 27 yr old rb ? dont get me wrong i love shady but hes got how many elite years left ? 3 at most ? meanwhile we gave up our young stud lb coming into a draft where theres depth to the rb class . just shocking

Worst trade ever .

my problem is dynamic rb ' s have been the bread and butter of this franchise that hasn ' t done much . they don ' t seem to make a difference in the w - l column no matter how well they do . if it was foles, id have no problem , as it is a desperate need but go through the list of our great rb ' s and you still have losses .

Some people have no idea what it takes to have a good football team. We trade Lynch who is one of the best RB in football for a 4 th rounder pick . We just traded a Stud LB for a dime a dozen RB. Well that move keeps us up with the Browns and Raiders for sure .

Not sure how I feel about this . Someone convince me it is a good trade .

I personally would not trade a promising young LB for a RB ( even though the D was great without Kiko ) . RB' s are really a dime a dozen- - - value just isn ' t there .

most of the posts on a couple Eagles boards I ' ve read like this move a lot more than Bills fans seem to .

my wife just told me this happened . what the **** is going on ?

Kiko is good, but McCoy is elite. Bill fans are certifiably insane for thinking they got hosed. But I gotta remember, they have blinders on about the rest of the NFL. They only think about the Patriots and their Bills.

NFL.com :

"The Eagles ' willingness to part with McCoy is a stunner on the surface, but this is essentially a salary dump in which the return value is a young linebacker with Pro Bowl potential.

Chip Kelly was reluctant to devote $11.95 million in cap space to McCoy after watching the 26-year-old's production drop from 5.1 yards per carry and 10.4 yards per reception to 4.2 and 5.5, respectively.

After being phased out of the passing game in favor of Darren Sproles early in the season, McCoy forfeited short-yardage work to Chris Polk down the stretch. In other words, McCoy was too often on the sidelines in critical situations. With McCoy's role diminished and his effectiveness waning, the Eagles reached the conclusion that it was better to pull the cord a year early than a year too late.

...

As long as Alonso returns to pre-injury form, the Eagles will boast one of the NFL's speediest inside linebacker duos in Alonso and Mychal Kendricks .

Here is my take from the trade. First, McCoy is 26 so I don't know why a lot of you are considering him to be an aging RB. He still probably has at least another 4-5 years on him before he starts slowing down. With that being said he has carried the ball more than 600 times these past two seasons which is HUGE. That alone can cause huge concerns about his durability in the future. Now looking at Alonso. He had a PHENOMENAL rookie year, not just good. He was Kuechly-esque imo. But, he took a year off due to that ACL injury so we don't even know if we are going to see even a flash of himself during his rookie year. That is why the Eagles are taking the bigger risk here. They are putting all of their eggs in a basket that the rookie Alonso will return, but you don't know that for sure. A lot of athletes are never the same after they tear their ACL. TD was a miracle and I can't even deny that I thought he was done after his 2nd. The good thing the Eagles have to look forward to is their cap space which out of all this speculation about the player, that is one fact that they have the advantage of. The Bills had a top defense without Alonso though so they were not worried about losing him, and if McCoy can keep the amount of production that he has had for at least 2-3 more years, the Bills do not lose this trade at all. McCoy is the type of impact player that can help their offense turn around immediately because of how versatile he is. On the other hand, the Eagles improved their D, but now took away the centerpiece of their O which leaves them in a way worse position next year. Especially with question marks around Foles and I highly doubt Mariota could make a big impact his rookie year, even with Chip Kelly and his offense that is basically built for him. So, in all BOTH sides win this trade, just in different ways. Short Term = Bills Long Term = Eagles.

    • you get so caught up in identifying the problems with everyone else what about an undersized Qb who almost led the league in bad throws last season & couldn't run the offense from under center which made it more difficult for the oL to sell the run on passing plays from the shotgun I dare say right lol & can almost assure you that Bryce Young played a bigger role in the  problems we seen along the oL & with our WR corps than most people realize
