Legit question, does the Saints downfall scare you at all of Cam's upcoming mega deal?

Franchise QBs do what they do: get paid.  That's just a part of the business.  No fear!

The Saints are where they are because they hung on to other pieces too long.

The fact is, all of this talk about a downfall are greatly exaggerated.  But I guess the Huddle do what it do, also.

You have to be concerned about how much Cam's deal is going to hurt cap space.  Same for Luke and to some degree, Star.

Windows open and close in the NFL all the time.  Panthers window is about to open.  It will close in a few years.

Star and Short aren't exactly taking the league by storm. They're good, but unless one of them breaks out this season I wouldn't worry too much about their deals.

We have a fugton of cap space opening up as we're finally getting all the terrible Hurney contracts off the books. Something like $75 million in cap space next year and over $110 million the year after that.

And even so Gettleman isn't running around handing out record breaking deals and mortgaging the future. Not worried at all, actually the opposite. We are set up to dominate the NFC South for years.

What?! Are you serious we will have 75 mill in cap space next year or are you exagarrating?

As long as the salary cap continues to increase then his mega deal will not seem that mega in a few years. Plus we have Gman handing out the contacts and finding cheap replacements for those that get too expensive. We are fine as long as Hurney stays away

The reason is because we don't have many players under contract over the next few years. That's how it works.

2016: 71 million

2017: 119 million

2018: 151 million

Gettleman knows what he's doing. He's set up the team really nicely for the future. Saints didnt get in that spot because of only Brees, they passed out a bunch of huge contracts and kept restructuring to push money into the future (something they're still doing).

As others have echoed, need to see the deal first, but not really. He's a franchise QB, those guys are going to get paid regardless.

The key is, not paying the wrong positions, restructuring those bad deals down the road, and basically run the team like Marty Hurney. Teams can continue to thrive, and pay their own guys (or others) with a mega deal QB on the books as long as they're set up right. Like say, the Packers having Rodgers mega deal, yet still having enough space to retain Cobb and Bulaga, pay Nelson and other pieces. It's all about contract structures, and who is getting the top money.

Welcome to reality kiddo

Truth be told, more like $45 million or so after we sign Cam to his extension, but yeah, we will have a LOT more room next year

It's nice to have a GM who understands how to maneuver the cap and set-up an opportunity to build a winner while coming out of cap hell.

These teams making all of these moves are making these swooping moves to try to climb out of an inevitable cap hell in the wrong way.  These are the times I actually appreciate being a constant rather than a continuously reshuffling franchise.

    • That's a very incorrect statement right off the bat, coaches get fired for winning ugly all the time.  Every coach of a playoff team that then gets fired, got fired because they won ugly and didn't improve their players enough to win in the postseason. Guys like Andy Reid have been fired for "winning ugly" like you said, because they kept winning in spite of the improvement of their players. Also, "this is a fanbase starved for wins" is a statement I also don't agree with, I'm not "starved for wins", I'm "starved for a winning and contending franchise" which are two VERY different things. If the team and fans just want to win some games, then that's a loser mentality, sorry, but it is.  We should want to contend, not win a handful of games.  Every time this comes up I point back to the Lions the last 5 years or so.  They were losing games but improving every week while doing so a few years back.  THAT is how you improve as a franchise and move the needle towards contending, not winning games ugly.
    • Good lord. I don’t think I have ever seen a hole that open.
    • this is true.  But NFL Ss and defenses are actively taking that away and playing to take them away vs most teams.  The problem thus far in BY's career......is they are cheating and not respecting the deep game which makes the smaller/mid range game harder to pull off.  and Dallas is an anomaly game.  using those random games that run counter to vast work......doesn't really change the discussion/issues in Carolina.  Bryce Young took the shots this week because they were not just NFL open but college open.    Wide open dudes downfield that really were coverage busts/issues.
