For anybody interested in an analystics view of why the Panthers should sign Crabtree....

Carolina Panthers: Sign Michael Crabtree

Given the skill set of quarterback Cam Newton, it's not a shock that the Carolina Panthers offense has been built around the run more than the pass since Newton arrived in 2011. For four straight seasons, the Panthers' offense has ranked higher in run offense DVOA than in pass offense DVOA. Last year, their running game dipped to 17th in DVOA after three straight years in the top ten. But their pass offense was even worse, ranked just 23rd.

Drafting Kelvin Benjamin last year gave the Panthers a size/speed freak to line up at one receiver spot, the kind of talent against whom defenses need to game-plan. The next step is to fill the other spot with the kind of receiver who can specifically take advantage of defenses that are either sitting in zone to prevent Newton scrambles, leaving a safety deep to prevent the bomb to Benjamin, or both.

That's where Michael Crabtree comes in. The former San Francisco first-round pick is the kind of excellent route-runner who eats up zone coverages. He doesn't have deep speed, but he's very quick to separate at the break of his routes. Newton is better at throwing from the pocket than most fans realize, and better at throwing with anticipation and hitting receivers after their breaks.

Crabtree struggled in our advanced metrics in 2014, with a below-average DVOA, but that's likely a product of the overall struggles of the entire San Francisco offense. Crabtree was above average in DVOA each year from 2010 through 2013, finishing sixth in total value by our DYAR (Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement) stat in 2012. As an added bonus, Crabtree is an above-average run blocker on the perimeter, a must for the Carolina offense. It could be just the right fit to help the Panthers follow up the first-ever repeat NFC South title with a first-ever third straight NFC South title.

People have got to drop this "we need speeeeed!!" shtick. We don't need speed. What we need is talent. Something Moore lacks and Crabtree has.

Not that it matters either way because this is an Incarcerated Bob tweet so it's likely crap.

Moore lacks talent? You're off your rocker. Did you even care to watch Moore carve Sherman and company in the preseason last year? Obviously not.

That's not exactly the best endorsement of his abilities but alright.

As I said, we're signing a holdover and clearly in the market for another rookie WR, this year or next. I'd rather have somebody I can trust guarding the base while that happens. Moore is an experimental player with upside.

And Crabtree is a receiver with an injury issue that hasn't lived up to his billing. So, there you go. I don't see ringing endorsements about either one, but I'll take the faster, more explosive guy with the upside, especially in our offense.

      He can be our post injury Delhomme in 2008. I am fine with Hubbard and Dowdle being our Willliams and Stewart.    Canales has some eating to do and hair to grow if he’s going to be Jeff Davidson tho.

      This season was about continuing to dig ourselves out of the crater Fitterer (and by extension Young with the three first round picks we traded for him) buried us in. Tepper is determined to make Bryce happen, so we're forced to play him at QB and adjust around his obvious inadequacies.

      Has nothing to do with the yards per carry, like at all. It's that 17 of his 25 passes were less than 10 yards downfield, against the worst pass defense in the league.  It's another game where Bryce's passing attempts were mostly dink and dunk type of passes. I wasn't asking us to throw it more yesterday, hell, if anything, you could make an argument that with how we were running it, we should have thrown it less than 25 times anyways.  It's that we still threw it 25 times but only had 8 of them where the ball was thrown 10+ yards downfield. Our schedule takes a dramatic shift after this week, even next week against the Jets, they have a decent defense for a team that hasn't won a game yet.  This was a great opportunity to allow Bryce to throw the ball downfield more against the worst pass defense in the league, hence I'd just have liked to see more than 8 of 25 passes be thrown further than 10 yards downfield. IF we were going to throw it 25 times against Dallas, I'd have liked to see a good 12-15 of them be further than 10 yards downfield, let Bryce work on his weakness against the worst pass defense in the league, not throw more dink and dunk passes per usual.
