Defensive Question

4-3 zone blitz, same sort of scheme the Steelers ran under Dick LeBeau but out of a 4-3 alignment.

The late Jim Johnson (longtime Eagles DC) was the primary architect of this attack. Rivera and McDermott both apprenticed under his leadership.

If you want more info, search 'Jim Johnson Eagles defense'. There are some good articles online that go into more detail.

For the most part we are a 4-3 zone defense. Now the reason we have run the nickel a lot is look at who we have in the division. Tampa has 2 wr, Atlanta 2 wr and NO has decent ones or did plus had Graham. It is a good defense to have depth for if you plan on passing the ball and possibly having shoot outs. The difference is other teams in our division can run the ball as we can so we have to be able to stop the run.

We're a 4-3 in name, but we run the nickel far more often than the 4-3 set.

That is why our front 4 is so critical to our secondary's success.  Not having the OLB in much or having to blitz a lot makes the secondary look better than they are.

The reason why I am relatively content with.the Panthers is because of the defense and their style of attack. Then again before I was a Panther fan I was a long time Eagles fan and still am when they are playing anyone besides the Panthers. I have always loved Jim Johnson's blitz packages and was ecstatic when we landed McDermott after wishing our defense played like Jim Johnson's in it's prime with Brian Dawkins as the hammer in the secondary so no one came over the middle . Man on the outside and zone underneath overloading on one side and blitzing from the other. Once they got in the red zone you knew Johnson was bringing 7. You just didn't know from where. Some of the Panthers biggest butt kicking have come from that defense. That is probably one of the only things I don't like is that McDermott is not as willing to send the house as Johnson. When the offense picks up the blitz you get exposed for long gains. So you have to get there if you are going to blitz or you are better rushing 4. Johnson's defenses created tremendous pressure and huge sacks when they needed them. Maybe we can upgrade the secondary and get out own Brian Dawkins in the draft this year.

    • Was at the game and NYCFC honestly outplayed CLT the whole way.  Khalina and Zaha carried the team.  Zaha's wife on IG making it sound like he's gone come July. They're going to have to pay him or find a big time replacement because the team looks like pretty lost without him.
    • No one's saying LaMelo has no blame we're responding to you acting like he's the reason they lost. The scapegoating and blaming the teams woes on his personality is where it's like Cam Newton all over again. It was a failure on multiple fronts and primarily Lee's. Dude said ON AIR pregame that they had to protect the paint and if that was his gameplan going in he couldn't have botched it more. As the commentators said Ball's a rhythm guy and Orlando was preventing him for getting any kind of flow going. I'm a normie watching on TV and said they needed to bait them into fouling to combat that. They didn't even try until the 2nd half when it was too late. I think it's fair to expect the star to overcome whatever but LaMelo was not the problem in that game and he's not what is holding the team back. He's the only reason they're flirting with being a great team. I kinda put the center play on Lee too. Moose is great until he's up against a big who can body him. We've always known that and that's what Kalkbrenner is for. I don't know if it would have changed much but Kalkbrenner should have had more minutes than him.  And moving forward with the center position, I just think it's the time to trade Diabate while his stock's high and that's not an indictment of his game. He's like an evolved combination of Biyombo and PJ. He's a great rim protector and the strength issue is just what you're going to have to deal with if you want that. But Kalkbrenner is perfectly capable of protecting the rim and we gotta get away from the undersized centers or it'll always be a problem for us.
    • Honestly its why that Jalen Coker grab was a big deal.  I'd been warming up to the idea of a sadiq pick and was adamantly against a receiver...but this altered my train of thought.  I mean For instance, Cade Otton signed for 3 yr 30 mil contract...thats not dramatically different than the rookie payscale for #19 (4 year 20 mil with 5th year option), however you KNOW otton is decent...no clue if Sadiq will be anything.
