17. Ron Rivera

Career Record: 32-31-1 (.508)

With The Panthers Since: 2011

Last Year’s Ranking: 17

Where did we come from? Are we alone in the universe? Is Ron Rivera a good head coach? Some questions are unanswerable. Rivera was as good as fired after getting off to a 1-3 start in 2013. Then he started riding the Riverboat, rallying his team to an 11-1 finish and first-round bye. Carolina lost at home in the Divisional Round, but Rivera’s walk on the wild side saved his job, and set high expectations for 2014. Of course, they weren’t realistic. Salary-cap issues left behind a depleted roster, while franchise player Greg Hardy played only one game before drawing an indefinite suspension. Cam Newton was forced to make do with a receiver corps led by stone-handed rookie Kelvin Benjaminand … Jerricho Cotchery. The result was another rocky start (3-8-1), and more questions about Rivera’s job security. Then something even more unlikely than 11-1 happened. The Panthers finished in a 4-0 flourish, stealing the division with a 7-8-1 record before winning a Wild Card game against the Cardinals. What have the Panthers’ back-to-back hot finishes taught us about Rivera’s coaching? Not a lot. Rivera’s offense remains unimaginative, while his defense foundered more than it excelled in 2014. Despite his “Riverboat” moniker, Rivera remains one of the league’s most vanilla shot callers. That’s fine if he can start putting together complete seasons. Until then, he’s a coach who’s gotten by on temporary guile and a laughable division.

Ron would be like, the best assistant head coach/defensive coordinator in the NFL.  But yea he's like the most mediocre head coach ever.  He's not bad, the guys play hard for him and the team typically comes out prepared, but he's not going to out coach anyone.

The guys do fight for him... But our offense sucks and shula is a large part of the problem. So, Ron gets that blame for continuing to employ him

I can't go back to having a horrible defense again either. I just can't.

17 Sounds about right... He's mediocre. And having 16 people in front of you and 15 people behind you is as mediocre as it gets

Hilarious listening to people bash someone for being "mediocre" when they are one if th 15 best in the world at what they do. The competition for head coaches is fierce and competitive. Yet people who can only dream at being just below avg at their jobs continue to take shots....priceless.

I didn't bash him for being mediocre. He just is. And you don't even know me so that reply was way out of line

    • Dude, I think I might be having Jarvy withdrawals... I ripped the sleeves off of all of my t-shirts in my sleep last night. Every bite of my Alpha-Bita cereal spelled Seth, this morning. And, I took 7 naps before lunch. I'm losing it guys! Jarvy's Jaunty Band of Jaggoffs are getting more play than he is... smh Team Canada doesn't treasure Jarvis the way he deserves. He should take his band down to Liechtenstein, get a bag of passports, and start his own Olympic team! The raw animal magnetism of Jarvilicious will bring in a handful of NHLers on its own. And, since the IOC believes in collective punishment, he could have his pick of the rookies. Then, just fill out the rest of the roster with the maple blooded great white northerners who couldn't make the top squad. Can't trust this assembled awesomery to just any old Liechtensteinien with a clipboard and a whistle. Gotta bring in a legend worthy of this gold medal gambit. A hockey HOFer with the balls to buck the system and the aura to match our maverick. Huere geil, Vaduz!!! 2030 Gold Medal guaranteed!
    • Tennessee isn't trading a QB on a 2nd round contract that has starting experience.  That's bad business.
    • OT is the top priority as it is both an immediate and future need.  I wouldn't be past trading up slightly to get the guy we want.  You need that rookie contract right now.  Icky is a dead 17.5 million for the season.  Morton is 20+ mil for the season, Hunt is 20+ mil for the season.  There needs to be forward thinking regarding the future.   Caleb Lomu is a left Tackle, he's a solid prospect, he may be the best pick for us now and in the future.  I would seriously consider cutting Hunt after 2026, and let Lomu and Icky fight for the LT job, loser moves inside.  Icky's future may be at guard after this injury anyway.  If Damien Lewis keeps up his level of play he will need to be paid sooner rather than later.  Yosh and BC can be our top two depth OL at an affordable price.  You will need to look at OT again in 2027. Getting an EDGE for the sake of getting an EDGE outside of the top 10 is pretty risky.  I wouldn't be against eyeing someone like Cashius Howell, Derrick Moore, or TJ Parker in the 2nd (even if we trade a future pick to move up) or DDS in the third. I'd love to see us try to sign both Leo Chenal and Matt Millano in FA.   Chenal for the blitzing element we are missing from our LB corps and Millano for his elite coverage.  They could both work in tandem.  Remember, our FO has deep ties to both KC and Buffalo. I love thinking about the draft, but until Free Agency hits, we are clueless.  Looking at the strength of FA and the draft, OL is priority #1, LB #2, and EDGE #3.  We know what happens to Bryce when protection falls apart.
