Ten

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

That is a good surmise of the talent Gman has accumulated.  I do believe this team is growing into a long run play off contender.  You keep articles like this coming, my friend.  I'll buy you scotch one of these days.  Single malt at that.  None of the blended.

Those ten are approximately a fifth of the final roster, assuming no one is cut or traded (which seems pretty unlikely).

Depending on how many of the other guys and/or how many draft picks make it, we could see somewhere close to half the roster be made up of talent accumulated over three offseasons (not even counting free agents).

That's the number of players either drafted or signed as undrafted free agents from the past two offseasons that are currently on roster and who either already have become or potentially may be poised to become starters or contributors in some phase of our game next season.

The names...

Wide Receiver Kelvin Benjamin (1st Round, 2014)

Defensive Tackle Star Lotulelei (1st Round, 2013)

Defensive Tackle Kawann Short (2nd Round, 2013)

Defensive End Kony Ealy (2nd Round, 2014)

Guard Trai Turner (3rd Round, 2014)

Free Safety Tre' Boston (4th Round, 2014)

Safety/Cornerback Bene Benwikere (5th Round, 2014)

Linebacker A.J. Klein (5th Round, 2013)

Guard Andrew Norwell (Undrafted, 2014)

Wide Receiver Corey Brown (Undrafted, 2014)

It's been said that players tend to make their most significant improvement going from their first year to their second, and almost as much from the second to the third.  If you believe that, then the ten players  listed above could all possibly show us something in the season to come.

And there are also a few others worth mentioning who could also potentially make a little noise this year...

Runningback Fozzy Whittaker (Waiver Claim from Cleveland, 2014) is a valuable part of the runningback rotation, had arguably the play of the game in the Wild Card

Tackle Mike Remmers (signed from Rams Practice Squad, 2014) goes into this season penciled in as the starter in the right tackle spot

Defensive End Wes Horton (Undrafted, 2013) had made some plays as part of the DL rotation.

Center Brian Folkerts (Street Free Agent, 2013) did decent as a backup when called upon

Cornerback Melvin White (undrafted, 2013) lost his starting spot last year but still contributed and has earned praise from the likes of Steve Smith

Safety Robert Lester (Undrafted, 2013) had a big moment in the victory over the Patriots on Monday Night Football

Tight End Brandon Williams (Street Free Agent, 2013) has flashed potential as a big bodied tight end

Linebacker Adarius Glanton (Undrafted, 2014) showed some flashes playing in a couple of games.

Runningback Darrin Reaves (Undrafted, 2014) looked decent in preseason and a few regular season games before getting hurt last year

Tackle David Foucault (Undrafted, 2014) clearly a project, but had a few decent moments when called upon to play in one game last year

These are all players that have been acquired in the past two years, and they make up a decent percentage of our current roster.  And this isn't even mentioning free agents signed this offseason.  There's also the enigma of Stephen Hill, signed after being released by the Jets last year and with a full season on the Practice Squad now under his belt.  Plus there's these two guys named Kuechly and Newton who are still young and may not have even reached their full potential yet.

Oh, and let's not forget this year's draft is coming up in a few weeks, where we'll have nine picks.

So this, ladies and gentleman, is the younger portion of our current roster building project.

And I don't know about you, but I kinda like it.

You need to change the title to "How to build a roster from the bottom up"

$13m over the cap. Bad contracts to oft-injured (Deangelo, Stewart) or unproductive (Godfrey) players, etc.

I'm curious as to whether the coaching staff views the third linebacker spot as a camp battle. I thought Adarius Glanton did a good job starting in place of Klein. He's certainly more athletic. Wouldn't surprise me if he ends up winning the job at some point, assuming we don't draft someone like Shaq Thompson.

I honestly wouldn't mind gauging Klein's trade value. A team like the 49ers could use a guy like him at MLB right now. I've always felt he was miscast as an OLB here.

Mr scot, maybe you could do this. I was going to, but didn't want a huddle welcome. You could do it in this thread, you almost have.

25 years or younger talent dave got for "free". No draft picks and only low salaries(min, but not counting SB ). Made the 53 at some point and are still currently a panther.

Off the dome; lester, horton, fozzy, white, jacobs, craveman, glanton, brown, and norwell. I believe that's tops in league, or id like to see if there's a team with better cheap young players (with little investment form 2013-15).

Edit: how could I forget the goat stephen hill........ lol and I believe b williams just turned 26.....
