Why the Panthers Likely Won’t Have Comp Picks in 2016

Ginn, Oher, and Martin don't count against us in our pursuit of comp picks because they were cut and not outright Free Agents.

However we really didn't lose anyone other than Hardy this offseason and unless he plays something like 10 games and makes a ton of money we won't see one.

OK, WHY?

We replaced the few Free Agents we had with people of equal value, Hardy is the only guy who got close to big money that is (as far as i understand the basis of how a comp pick is determined) Bell is replaced by Oher, Velasco by Martin, DeCoud by Coleman, Blackburn if he isn't re-signed is replaced by Trusnik and DeAngelo is replaced by Todman

You get Com Picks based on what you lost and how you replaced those you lost, we lost nothing of value that we haven't replaced with someone of equal value. Except maybe Hardy, but his contract structure and lack of playing time last year may be the reason he doesn't count

That's completely untrue.

Guys that were CUT do not count against you. Only guys that hit the open market.

If Hardy plays 10 games we'll get a 3rd or 4th. If not we get nothing. So his suspension is still very relevant to the Panthers, no matter how much Jeremy wants to get rid of the Hardy talk on here.

That might not be the case. As it stands right now we have gained more eligible free agents then we have lost. According to Voth's article that alone would prevent us from receiving a comp pick for Hardy even if he plays 16 games.

If a few of our free agents, such as Bell and Blackburn, were signed by other teams then in theory we could have a net loss in free agency and therefore be eligible for comp picks. At this point any suspension that Hardy faces could impact his salary and playing time and therefore have an influence on what we receive for him.

Here is an article that goes into greater detail about the formula:

I know, I expect Bell and someone else to sign elsewhere. Teams gotta fill their 90.
