Signing 1st Overall Pick

Anyone remember when it was a big deal to strike a deal with the 1st overall pick BEFORE the draft even started? What happened to this? Has the new Rookie cap stopped this from being a big deal?

I remember Mario Williams signed, I think Russell did as well? Just wonder if Tampa knows they are picking Winston why not go ahead and start contract talks?

with the new CBA, there's not a big incentive like there used to be. With those $50 million+ contracts for someone who never played a snap in the NFL both parties had a long time to discuss the contract. Now there's a limit and that contractual dispute is out of the window. That's one reason IIRC.

Not necessary with the new rookie wage scale.

I remember it used to be done. QBs drafted #1 would get bigger raises over last year's #1, then the next year, a DE or LT would go #1 and want more $$$ than the QB got last year. Caused lots of holdouts, and haven't seen those since the new rookie wage scale.

Though I agree with the rookie wage scale comments, who says they haven't?

Having the top pick gives team's leverage in case they arent happy enough with a player and can get extra picks and possibly more valuable players.

Just so happens that this year there are quite a few teams that covet both or one or the other of the QBs at the top and no team is just gonna give up their right to entertain talks concernkng that coveted pick.

    • MHS, You are missing Claudin Cherelus is a LB that's in the mix for the 4th spot. He's been here for 2 years and had a couple injuries. I mean he was a wavier claim and been here for evero system, just had bad luck when given a chance. Jon Rhat is the current leader mainly cause of he is the ST ace. But Id say, Cherelus has the same % to make the roster.  CB has the recent wavier claim of MJ Devonshire a 2024 7th rounder. He's got the good-great combine numbers but he's small size. Still he's in the mix for backup duties, in fact all the non-UDFA are wavier claims.  ______________________________________________________________   Dam shame about Clowney. I view this as a bad move. I feel clowny is well worth the 7.7, even as a backup. He played hard the whole year without help. I just feel he would have helped more than either DJ Johnson or Barno.  My only cope is he's 32 and at any point his miro-knee could force him to drop off a cliff performance-wise. I wanted to keep him around at least until the trade deadline and if no chance at playoff, flip him for a anything. NFL is a meat grinder, no love for locals....
    • Might as well. We need to get these rookies on the field and see if they can play ASAP.
    • This hate this part of football and then you have to get down to the 53 Man Roster 🙁
