Hypothetical for Bengals LT Whitworth

Recommended Posts

Just read an article about Bengals LT Andrew Whitworth upset after the Bengals double dipped at the OT position in the draft.

Would you be in favor/against possibly trading for Whitworth?

Just some pros and cons:

Pros:

- Experienced LT for a good team that ranked 6th in the NFL in rushing yards (Carolina was 7th)

- Did not allow a sack in 533 snaps last year

- Only gave up 1 hit and 8 hurries

- Highest Pass Blocking Efficiency (98.7)

OT Stats Link: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/02/12/sig-stats-pbe-offensive-tackles/

Cons:

- He is 33 years old, nearing the end of his career as a dominant LT

- May cost a lot to get him due to Ogbuehi being unable to play this year and possibly reluctance throwing Fisher into the fire as starting LT

- Stats may be inflated due to the dominance of the rest of the Bengals OL (ranked 6th best in pass block, 6th in run blocking, and 6th in penalties)

- Is a captain and may be reluctant to leave Cincinnatti

No doubt would be an upgrade over Oher (though I do hold out hope he returns to his early career successes) and Martin at LT. Would also allow for Remmers and Williams to solidify the RT with Trai / Norwell / Kalil filling in the rest of the spots.

Thoughts?

I'm not that interested in him, honestly. Maybe it's the attitude.

Prior to the draft, he called out the Bengals in the media. He basically said "I dare you to draft someone at my position".

Well, the team called his bluff and drafted two. Now he looks pretty silly.

Andrew Whitworth was arguably the best tackle in football last year. He only gave up 1QB hit and 8 hurries last year that is absolutely ridiculous and i would love for the Panthers to go after him should he become available.

I would certainly be down with it but after listening to the G- Man interview on WFNZ he sounds like Oher is adequate in his eyes.

    • Any idea what happened to him at LSU? im reading that he was considered a 1st round pick in 2023, had an off 2024 season with only 4 sacks but was also on a horrible FSU team then went to LSU where he was supposed to be on an aggressive defense that should have given him a lot of sacks but he only ended up with one….   was he injured? Did the top SEC competition expose him? What happened? Cause this guy was considered a top prospect .
    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
