2014 Incomplete passes breakdown

Recommended Posts

Was looking at a breakdown of incomplete passes for QBs. It includes overthrows, underthrows and some other interesting stats.

Cam led the league in overthrows at 17% (15% in 2013), ranking 36 out of 36 QBs assessed (minimum 200 pass attempts to be ranked).

He was 32 out of 36 QBs in what they called bad throws (I dunno what that is). He was 6 out of 36 for underthrows which mean he would rather overthrow than underthrow, a stat in which Rodgers ranked 28 out of 36. More other interesting stats like dropped passes (where our WR actually were better than claimed, ranking 22 out of 36 in number of drops).

Read more other stats like pass defensed etc here.

note they wrote that Kaepernick, Cam, and Bridgewater all overthrow more than they under throw because they are known for letting it rip. But seemed to they liked how they got a speed receiver for Kaepernick and Bridgewater, but they don't like how we got Funchess for Cam:

"Things are a little different when the receivers are big and slower and the quarterback is not very accurate. Cam Newton overthrew 17 percent of his passes, the highest rate in the league. Some may cite the injuries he suffered last season for this, but a healthier Newton in 2013 was at 15 percent overthrows -- which would have been the third-highest rate in 2014. Carolina added another big target in the draft with Devin Funchess, but that might not be the type of receiver Newton needs more of with Kelvin Benjamin already there.

...

Newton, Colin Kaepernick , and Teddy Bridgewater all overthrew the ball at least 10 percent more often than they underthrew it. The overthrows have been a common criticism of Bridgewater in his young career, and the other two passers have been known for letting the ball rip as well. Maybe adding players like Mike Wallace (Vikings) and Torrey Smith (49ers) can help in that department in 2015."

Nice logic, lol.

Didn't somebody say that Cam was working with a QB Guru this offseason?

Also, TBH, I'm just content that Cam will always be an erratic, inconsistent passer because he is a gunslinger type passer.. However, I would much rather Cam wildly throw it out of the stadium than have constant underthrows were corners undercut the pass.

I agree with you about all of that, but I wish cam would throw it out of play when he sails the ball because overthrows that stay in play are just as scary as underthrows. Especially if those overthrows are tipped

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
