David Newton: Tough cuts may be a coming at WR/RB

The 4th WR has not played more than 15% of snaps in four years of Ron Rivera.  I didn't go past that, because it was Jeff Davidson, so there's no reason to look at a 4th WR.   But, from memory, the last player to start the season as a 4th WR and contribute heavily?  Keary Colbert, who wasn't active when Steve Smith wasn't on IR.

This isn't how teams work.  You have to play a role here.  Ted Ginn returns punts, we all assume Funchess is the other starter.  A player will step up that might be better than Ginn as a 3rd WR, and that seems reasonable.  That player will also get a jersey.

These are the only thing that matter.   If a player gets that 5th WR spot, great.  Hope you enjoy how he looks in shorts watching games, he's not suiting up.

Are we still bringing up how Cotch caught 10 TD passes 2 years ago???.....smh

The Huddle brings up garbage players like Hakeem Nicks because they had a 1,000 yard season five years ago bro. Two years might as well have been yesterday.

And Steve Smith can't play anymore either.   How many of you Einsteins said that this time last year?  You're totally missing the point about Cotchery. He was playing in a role that he really shouldn't have been in.  When he is playing the role that he should be in, he has proven capable.  I am not saying that he will be the WR3, but he will very much be in the mix, as he is still a very crafty veteran receiver who knows how to run routes.

Hill will stay on the PS if possible or else be cut/claimed by some other team. Philly Brown does not have a guaranteed spot on the roster. Bersin will have to fight to keep his spot. Cotch will make the team barring a horrendous camp because you can't go into a season with too many young WRs. KB, Funchess, and Olsen are the only untouchables when it comes to WR/TE.

We have other veterans. Cotchery is doing nothing but declining. If he shines in camp and could stick as a number 3, so be it. But like he said, if he's going to be somewhere near the bottom, it makes sense to give the position to a raw, but talented younger receiver climbing to his ceiling instead of an aging vet scraping his floor.

You need veterans in your position group. TD and Roman Harper arent gonna be giving advice (or at least good advice) to rookie WRs. Proehl will teach the WRs what they need to know, but its not the same as having a veteran who can do more.

we do not have 3 receivers better than him, dispite your strong discontent for him.

You might want to reread what I said. However, we do have three receivers with more potential than him, and very possibly have three receivers better than him right now, despite your love affair for him.
