B/R's Matt Miller Gives Offseason Grade a B+

top dawg

Matt Miller is actually very complimentary of our draft.  He gave the FA pick-ups a C, but obviously gives our draft an A if he gave us an overall grade of B+. If you wait for the second video to load, you will see that he gave Gettleman an A for selecting Shaq. Chris Simms was not as complimentary because he didn't think that Thompson was necessarily a first round pick and that he doesn't know how we're "going to use him".  I understand that, in a way, but that's where you have to trust Dave Gettleman, Ron Rivera, and Sean McDermott who are not that shabby.  If you listen to the third video---which you should---regarding Devin Funchess, you will catch Matt Miller praising Dave Gettleman and giving the Funchess pick an A- and "ditto" Chris Simms.

Say what you want about Bleacher Report's Matt Miller, but he sounds like he is kind of in tune with the pulse of the team, as is Simms and Adam Lefkoe.

Let the videos load and listen to all three.

Not sure I want Miller praising our offseason.  Seems like he usually is dead wrong about us every year.  Took the dude 2 years to finally give Luke his props.  Called him an overrated average stat stuffing pile jumper coming out of college and all through his rookie year... Showing that he obviously didn't watch him in 2012, yet had such a strong ignorant opinion.

I haven't clicked the link, but he also used to be really fuging clueless about our team... maybe he finally started taking his job serious and started doing a little homework on us.

He seemed pretty well read about us this time around. He even said in the video he's done criticizing our LB draft picks lol.

Most legit people who give grades do so based upon watching tape, whether it be from college or the pros.  Grading of free agent pick-ups and draft choices are pretty much standard fare---just a way to kill some time until the action starts.  Prognostication pertaining to off-season acquisitions is all based upon a certain amount of projection during this time of year, so it's not necessarily about putting stock into what anyone is saying until we actually begin to see some results.

That being said, I appreciate national writers whose opinions and work reflect more than just the general uninformed narrative of the masses who sometimes cover too many teams to really know what the hell they are talking about.  At least Miller seemed more knowledgeable than some.

Matt Miller is an absolute moron. I can't get behind him just because he praises our draft. I remember getting in an argument with him a few years back because he said a certain quarterback was sure to bust simply because he was half an inch too short. That QB seemed to do ok leading his team to back to back superbowls....

Dude wanted Luke to bust so bad it was ridiculous.  Haven't cared a bit for him since then.  He's extremely stubborn and opinionated.

I remember back before we switched Luke to MLB his rookie season he was posting weekly to crow about about how "average" and over-drafted he was.  He shut the fug up real quick once Luke got put at MLB, had full control over the defense, and played noticeably better (he still got in a few pile jumper remarks)... until DROY voting came around and he bitched endlessly about how Wagner got robbed.

    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
