things I liked so far from training camp

based on just reading things on the net...haven't seen with my own eyes.

With all the negative stuff about Oher and Star getting carted off, and don't think the

Huddle is the only sports fan website that does this, lets find something to smile about.

Seems to me that

1.  Peanut is still Peanuttin'.

2.  CAP is Cappin'.

3.  better attitude from Kelvin.  I was really getting worried about this.

4.  Shaq making plays already.

5.  Lee Ward being a possible answer to some of our blocking problems.

what u got?

All aboard the Lee Ward hype train, the punisher express.  We'll be making no stops, and running everything over in our path.

I'm liking what I'm hearing about Benji. Sounds like he's putting in the effort to take the next step which would be huge.

Liking what I'm hearing about our DE's. Hopefully they all do well come regular season.

I like what I'm hearing about the O-Line as opposed to last year. Yes, Oher is struggling, but everyone else seems to be doing pretty damn well. That's not bad considering how terrible things were this time last year.

i am still hopeful that Oher is just readjusting to the LT position after an injury riddled couple seasons. i am concerned. but i think he just needs Matsko's magic and time to gel with the rest of the line.

that said, Cam seemed visibly frustrated at times today. no idea what for. but i heard him yell.

I'm liking what I've heard about Mario, I've seem some good things about Big Frank, getting

worried about Kony.  I know he's only a second year DE, but I would like to hear more about him

flashing or just showing improvement.

I wouldnt worry too much.  Frank was poised to breakout last year and I'm sure that boy is hungry.  Mario is on pace to make place for himself too.  If Kony is plugging along thats fine.  We will need him at some point and he will be ready.

I have no idea what any of this means

Translated

1.  Free Agent Cornerback Charles Tillman is showing that he is still a very good cornerback, despite his age and recent injuries.

2.  Rookie running back Cameron Artis-Payne is already showing he can contribute this year and be a future full time starter....not bad for a late 5th round pick.

3.  2nd year receiver Kelvin Benjamin is displaying a relaxed and happy attitude.  There were reports that their was some "friction during OTA's regarding him showing up "overweight."   The first sign of an attitude problem at the wide receiver position gets me worried.  It appears that he is in the right frame of mind for TC.

4.  Our first round pick, lineback Shaq Thompson, missed most of the OTA's.  Now that he has pads on, you want to hear good things about the player you drafted in the first round.  We aren't getting reports that he is dominating, but we are getting positive reports.  Many thought he was a bad pick for us in the first round.

5.  Lee Ward is a rookie un-drafted free agent.  His performance thus far has been very good and he has a chance to make the team.  He is showing he is a good blocker.

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
