Rivera On RB Cuts

people are overreacitng. cutting tolbert because he didn't get in the endzone? they stuffed the box because they knew cam wouldn't run because its preseason. regular season i expect that to be a td 9/10 times.

Sure cause this team has had no problem punching it in from the 1 in the past.

There's space for Ward and Wegher, but both will have to play out big time over the next two preseason games to make the team. Players like Fozzy and Brockel won't be pried away from the roster without some kind of really good reason. Their experience alone gives them extra points when it comes to making the roster.

And Tolbert is going nowhere. His style of play isn't shown much in the preseason --- too much chance of damaging the goods.

I'm tired of hearing about this so called experience as a reason to keep certain players.  From what I could tell Brockels experience didn't help at all on those blocks he didn't make on the goal line plays. ( and he apparently sprained a  shoulder without hitting anyone )

Tolbert looked like a RB in self preservation mode on those 2 goal line runs.  He hasn't done anything in 2 years.

If this management team keeps someone because they are featured on a ticket. Then the best we will consistently ever be is 8-8. The real good teams make tough decisions minus the emotions it's a what have you done for me lately league.

Keep the best 53

I can't argue too much there, but there are a couple of things to consider. First, the experience these players have is something that isn't shown in the preseason. No matter how it looks, everything we're doing right now is pretty much a vanilla game plan. More complex plays aren't in use yet, and that's where the experience often (not always) shines through. The Panthers, like every team, have an extensive playbook. Playbook knowledge is a big deal and takes sometime for a player to accumulate.

Secondly, for all of the good play we've seen from Wegher and Ward, it has been against the other teams' bottom of the roster guys and folks that won't survive the cuts. Both guys need playing time with the better players just to really judge what potential they really have. Third teamers are often decent to good college level players, so a really good college quality player can outshine them. That really good college level athlete, however, might not be able to hold their own against first or second string pro-level, experienced athletes.

We've got a couple more games ahead in the preseason just for this kind of reason. The third preseason game is generally where you see these kids get tested. We're up against New England, so you couldn't ask for a harder test for them. I'm hoping they both shine out and lock down roster spots. But let's not throw Tolbert (or even Brockel) on the fire quite yet.

I don't think they will cut Tolbert. Likely talking about Fozzy.

I realize this means very little but Tolbert was featured on one of the seasons game tickets that psl holders get. Hard to imagine them cutting a guy they deemed worthy enough to put on the ticket along with nine other core members.

they cut steve smith!

RB/FB corps should be

stewart/CAP/wegher

tolbert/ward

if we need one more RB for depth then either todman or fozzy. i don't care who, but i love those three rookies and think we've got the potential for something special with those three guys. imo, they are the future of the run game. gettleman nailed it with those guys.

I'll  agree with you on some of that. But Brockels time is up. Shouldn't have made the team last year and now there is an actual blocking FB on the roster to replace his sorry ass with. He is a hybrid FB/ TE that can't block or catch? And  not to mention I'm sick of watching him lose his lane assignment on STs. Or actually staying in his lane but missing the tackle.

So he doesn't even do well what he supposedly specializes in.  Why take up a roster spot with a non performing  specialist?

I believe they've played him more this preseason so he could  show his value. And in turn he's proved he doesn't have any. I'm betting Getts has known this for sometime now.

i agree with this. sure, being able to play multiple positions and take on different roles is great....unless you just aren't that good at any of them and your roster spot is taking one that could be fulled by a specialist at one position.

being able to do one thing really well >>>>>> being meh at a couple things and not particularly good at anything

ie....ward >>>>>>>>>brockel

Moving Stewart or Tolbert would make sense.  Love for it to be a trade but doubt that could happen

Getting rid of Stewart?  After we just lost KB?  What on earth are you thinking?!!!

I think Fozzy is very definitely on the bubble.  Brockel could be too, as much as the coaches love him.  I think they may recognize that we need some greater explosive run potential on offense, and Wegher may well bring that.

If I had to predict the roster today I'd think it might be:

Stewart

CAP

Wegher

Todman

Tolbert

Ward to PS.

Tolbert had 37 carries last year in 8 games, he averaged 2.1ypc and 10% 1st down rate (he's short yardage back) and 0 TDs.

preseason or not, he didn't look quick enough last night if a pile gets in his way.

I'd rather have Ward and Wegher over Fozzy and Tolbert.

That doesn't really make any sense. You're overlooking a guy who near single handedly won us a playoff game because some other guy looked good in the 4th quarter of the preseason.

I'm not overlooking anyone. But the point is just because an UDFA played well last year when we had no one healthy at the position doesn't mean he's guaranteed a spot this year when we have much more competition. How does that not make sense?

Stew isn't going anywhere.  We've been babysitting his fat contract and injuries for years now.  If he wants to get re-signed and get starter quality money (probably not here though) he is going to have to show up and put together a big season.

If some team is willing to take Stewarts contract away from the Panthers, please let them.

    • I had started typing my post hours ago and didn’t finish it and just came back to finish it, posted it, then saw yours and saw we were pretty much saying the same thing - even the games that stick out to us most.  I don’t think a lot of people remember that SF playoff game, but I felt like I had just got mugged in broad daylight.  I remember them calling Mitchell for unnecessary roughness, and then I remember watching Boldin take a super late cheap shot, dead in front of the ref and then showing him watching the whole thing in replay…  the refs let them have a fuging field day and didn’t do jack poo, but if we so much as breathed the wrong way it was fuging 15 yards.  Each team playing under two completely different sets of rules.  poo hurt.  I was enraged.  I’ve never went back to watch either that game or SB50 and never will.  fuging robbery.
    • I’ve said it a million times since, but it’s impossible to keep them from affecting the game.  In SB50, they literally took the game from us, and they did it early.  Cotchery’s no-catch?  The miraculous amount of times we converted for a first down only to have it suddenly called back make it a 3rd down and 15+ against the best defense in the league that specialized in rushing the passer and man coverage on the back end?  And you do that enough times, you kill the morale and confidence of the team you’re doing it against.  It’s telling the one team “you can do whatever with impunity” and the other “you can’t do whatever they’re allowed to do.”  It changes the aggression level.  It essentially neuters one team and allows the other to do whatever the fug they want.  Imagine you call the police for help and they get there and tell you to sit still while the other party beats the poo out of you and you can’t defend yourself.  That’s what the officials do.  There is no way to avoid them affecting the game.  And more often than not, it’s the most subjective calls they use to do so.  Even in SB50…  you saw the Broncos commit more egregious penalties than anything we did, and barely any of it was called.  Their OL was holding all fuging game and the refs did nothing.  We already had our work cut out for us against two future HOF edge rushers and the refs played to their advantage with that.  From what I remember, both Oher and Remmers were called for holding at various times and their hands were in the INSIDE of the defender.  It was garbage, but all by design. Also, if there is any video of it anywhere, go look at what the refs did against us back in 2013 against SF.  The fix was in there too.  They stepped in early and often and ensured we knew we were not allowed to play with the same aggression or intensity SF was.  It was disgusting as well. at this point, I hope Vince McMahon, errr, I mean Goodell just finally scripts us to win it, because this poo is not won via competition or off merit.
    • You can go back to the New York Knicks somehow getting Patrick Ewing.  I saw a story where they place the New York Knick card in the freezer right before the drawing.  It was simple.  Show everyone the cards are undetectable to the human eye.  All they had to do was grab the coldest card. IMO ever since Goodell took over the NFL it has been fishy.  Patriots winning the SB after 9/11, New Orleans after Katrina and Peyton Manning's going away gift against us. The terrible calls during that game were blatantly one sided.  New England should have been stripped of their first 3 SB when they were caught spying on the other team in their SB wins.  I think the evidence against the Patriots was so damning Goodell felt it could ruin football and they brushed it under the table.   In the 2004 SB, How did we go from practically no yards in the first Quarter to setting a record in the 3rd Qtr.  Dan Henning changes the game plan.  IMO probably the greatest half time adjustment of all time.
