Short passes

People are aware that our corners and safeties aren't the best and would rather take their chances challenging that group than waiting for our pass rush on seven step drops. Especially with Luke out of the middle to keep teams honest in pass coverage. Short passes done well is the closest thing to an indefensible play as there is in football, as we saw yesterday. People blaming the pass rush are out to lunch. McCown managed the game like an absolute professional and wasn't asked to make the difficult throws until the game was on the line. When he did, Norman made him pay. Three step drop and out in just a few seconds. No time for a pass rush to get there. Plus, our corners aren't great at press coverage. They're not an overly physical unit. Big bodied WR and TE are able to box them out and make short catches.

Lost in the shuffle is that Sean Payton called a great game with a backup QB. Credit where credit is due. He didn't ask McCown to do anything unreasonable until he was forced to make him attack down the field and when he did, we made him pay. The Saints wanted to run the same offense they ran in the 1st quarter for the whole game. Killing clock and putting pressure on our offense after 5+ minute drives. It almost worked.

Luke will help a lot with this when he gets back. Klein is slow and not great in coverage so that area of the field has been exploited in the last couple games with Luke out. Hopefully Luke helping to take away the short passing game will also help out the pass rush some by giving them more time to get to the QB.

Agreed. Payton had a great game plan for McCown.

Stopped reading at your first sentence.

Josh Norman might be one of the best, if not the best corners in fotoball this year. Bene ain't no slouch either, and we have some solid vets contributing as well.

i cant hep but visualize a stubborn child throwing a tantrum everytime someone throws that line out.  Imagine a world where everone did that...it already close.

Read past thing you disagree with. You might learn a thing or two.

lol at Josh norman being the best Cb in football this year. Let's not get carried away now. Having a very good year but he's not Revis or sherman or some others.

If I told you on Saturday that McCown was going to complete 31 out of 38 passes with 8.2 YPA, would you have predicted a loss?  Most starting QBs don't do that well, let along backups.  McCown's also way way way more mobile than Brees, and he really used that to his advantage Sunday.  Bottom line is, we had no film on him, and he got in a zone quickly and stayed there.  It won't happen again.

Next week we face famous Jameis, and he's got some film to study.  Hopefully we get Keuchly back too.  I expect that yesterday will be used as a wake-up call by our defense, and they're going to bring the pain to the rookie on Sunday.

This is an issue Atl will take advantage of as well. We better get a hold on it before we play them. I do believe Luke will play a big part in that. So I do take comfort knowing that we were able to overcome that weakness without him. In all fairness the punt return for a td was what really kept them in the game. McClowns arm actually won the game for us in the end. All we really need to do is.....KEEP POUNDING!!!!

    • I don’t know about floor in a team defense sense but we needed more.  The floor that I am familiar with is our QBs floor and it is so low that every other part of the team needs to be beefed up.     We tried our best to improve these things and I think we did improve the defense and we at least kept the offense  from sinking from no LT.  And ostensibly helped the receivers too.   So we kept a window open that we at least have a chance to improve our record by a game of two.  Which would probably give us the division.

    • Yeah. I am one of. those who think a JAG RB can eat with really good blocking. (Brooks is most important in my mind, in tbe passing game and that is what we’ll lose without him)  There are a lot of aspects to this. The big one that caused us to struggle is Young and his arm scared no one.  Best back, best blocking still cannot defeat a really good defense if they are not forced to respect the pass.  And teams did not.    But, a strong OL and running game Can get us over against weaker defenses.  And if Bryce still doesn’t scare anyone we can still win some games. Like last year  So it is really important to tend to that OL.   Get that straight and see if in his fourth year he can finally back defenses off. That is what if is all about this year to me, on the Bryce front.
