Could Colts history be repeating itself?

I'm noticing some interesting historical parallels between this season and the Colts at the end of the Peyton Manning era.

Looking back at the 2011 Colts, you had...

- a losing season

- turmoil inside the organization

- an injured quarterback

After that disaster of a year, the team cleaned house. Team owner Jim Irsay replaced the GM (Bill Polian) the head coach (Jim Caldwell) and the team's franchise quarterback (Manning).

Fast forward to 2015. What do you see in Indy?

- a season going badly

- turmoil inside the organization

- an injured quarterback

So could it be time to clean house again?

Let's examine...

Pagano is pretty much gone. Few doubt that. There was some thought that Grigson might be okay.  Recent stories, however, may be casting some doubt on that idea.

But what about Luck?

Surely, the team wouldn't dump its young cornerstone quarterback this quickly.

Would they?

Well, a couple of things to consider:

- New GMs and coaches often want their own quarterbacks, and Luck could be viewed as damaged goods depending on the severity of his injuries.

- Luck is expected to net a jaw-dropping contract in short order. Will a new coach and GM be willing to pay that based on what they're seeing right now?

- The Colts are likely to finish the season with a high draft pick, one that could be used to take a new, young franchise quarterback with no history or injury issues (and a significantly cheaper price tag).

- Even now, you could likely get a pretty good deal on draft picks and/or players in exchange for Luck. Might be just the kind of thing a franchise in need of a rebuild could use.

- There's also the crazy owner factor. Irsay is more than a little off, and he's already dumped one franchise quarterback who proved to have something left  in the tank.

So who knows?

My gut tells me that Pagano and Grigson will be sent packing, but not Luck. I don't see his injury being enough for them to bail on him just yet. And even with this season's struggles, there's still plenty of reason to believe he's a franchise quarterback.

Whomever is given the reins of the Colts future (Sean Payton has been speculated) will look to do a better job building around him than the previous regime did.

But could the Colts actually decide to start over completely?

I'd say it's possible.

IMO no way do the Colts get rid of Luck. As far as I'm concerned any new GM and or coach that comes in would be told very early in the process that Luck stays.

My take also.

But to be fair, did anyone see them dumping Peyton Manning?

Yeah, Manning was hurt, but he also meant way more to the organization then than Luck does now.

Is it completely out of the question?

Yes.  Peyton was like 35 already (at least) and had a serious injury that made it questionable he'd still be able to play.  Luck is significantly younger and his injury significantly less serious.

Yea I think everyone saw them dumping Manning...he's shot...and when he wasn't totally busted he floundered late in the season to screw it up for the Broncos.

His injury is pretty bad honestly...it is one of those where you barely even play through it...if you can't feel half your arm you can't put enough strength on throws because you don't know how much effort you are actually putting on it.

Also Luck had the "next Manning" overhype associated with him so it's really easy to replace Manning if you think you have 22 year old Manning as your draft pick.

    • I meant write off in the entire class being absolute garbage and that being on Dan  FA was pretty solid but Dan and Brandt handing out one big terrible contract to Turk Wharton. Milton was their top target and the pivot from Milton to Turk while paying Turk what they did was insane.  Id LOVE to know had we not paid Turk what type of contract he would’ve received. 3/30 mayyyybe? This is someone Brandt obviously vouched for.  I’ve watched a few of Tilis’ interviews now. One with Jourdan and one with Yates. He’s a big Moneyball fan. Giving Turk the deal they gave him is the complete opposite of the whole Moneyball idea. They paid a dude who they saw some potential in money that you’d pay someone that has actually made an impact  The worst part is that he’s 100% here next year too. That contract keeps him here until 2027 for sure
    • Are you kidding? They just now figured out they could use someone else for a qb sneak.
    • The biggest problem is that his upward trend is still well below NFL average. At some point there's just too much evidence to ignore. I've been there for awhile now. Honestly, it only took a handful of games for me to realize that he just had too many physical limitations to overcome to ever be a legitimate starter. I get that the organization couldn't afford to pull the plug that quick after that investment but there's absolutely no way we should've gone into year three without legitimate competition on the roster. We always a year behind kn this Bryce thing. This year should've been the legit competition year and this offseason should've been the moving on point. Hopefully we'll play catch up but I expect the trend to cj tinge and next year will be the vet competition year.
