We got so lucky to get Cam Newton so quickly. Think about it, Cleveland and Chicago come to mind. And look at the QBs since Cam came into the league, we would still be searching. Just something to think about.

Every time I see a thread like this I think about The Trade That Didn't Happen. And that means I will need a lot of extra alcohol tonight...

I'm not sure if it was luck as much as, well...we stunk like 3 day old poo marinated in spoiled milk during Foxy's last year. You can't get that top pick without being really, really bad.

You are exactly right. In this league, if you mess up on the QB, you pay for years. Bears, Bucs, Browns, Texans, Bills, Jets, Redskins, Eagles... the list goes on and on. And it takes coaching that can grow a QB patiently, too.

Cam, as phenomenal as he is, could have been ruined had he ended up someplace like Washington, Buffalo, Tennessee or Houston.

Just think about it...we very easily could have pick Marcel Darius or Blaine by God Gabbert. Really gotta give a big shout out to old Hurn Dog for that one...he really hit a home run when he drafted Cam.

Hurn Dog hit a lot of home runs, be just had some flaws that all came to light when Peppers left and Delhome fell apart. 2008 was a real turning point.

Someone in the Bills FO (I think) referred to it as QB purgatory which is a perfect description in my opinion. Especially if your team is just good enough to keep you out of the top 10 in the draft. We've kind of been in left tackle purgatory for a couple of years now, but hey, gettlemagic.

We were the worst football team of the decade.  How ironic that we will be entrenched in the greatest dynasty of the salary cap era at the end of the decade.

For all the poo people on here talk about Hurney, it's a good thing he didn't listen to many of them. If it were up to a significant number of Panthers fans 5 years ago, we would have never drafted Newton. You have to give Hurney credit for Cam, and Luke, both picks were met with a good bit of ridicule here at the time.
