Timing is everything (re: Gettlemagic again)

Im sure it has gone through most of our minds here but once again the timing in which things happened this off season couldn't have come at a better time.  Especially with Newton's contract. He is now locked in with us for 5 years at a VERY reasonable salary compared to how he is performing right now (MVP caliber)...could you imagine if we had held off until after this year and tried to sign him to the same contract (if we do indeed go very deep into the playoffs)?  Would he be wanting that 25/year deal?  While I think Cam really does care to have talent surround him and isn't out to be greedy, I could only imagine what his agent would be saying right now with this kind of a start and the way he has been performing this year.

Steal of the year, signing wise.  Gettleman & this organization really saw the writing on the wall with this guy.

We have all-pro offensive and defensive leaders locked in for the next 5 years. We have money to retain most of our FAs next year, money to sign some of our DTs to long term contracts and we'll have 5 or so draft picks to bring in behind the starters. This team is being built to last. I am so excited about the future thanks to the current GM and coaching staff. They see the long game and have had the patience we lack, and it's starting to pay off.

I think Cam deserves a lot of credit too.

I think he ultimately was the one that said "get the deal done" because he didn't want this to be a distraction all season.

Cam does deserve some credit.  I'm so happy he wants to stay in Charlotte and win here.

I remember right after we drafted him he had a meeting with Michael Jordan, who probably advised him to value the endorsement deals.

Cam is earning over $11mil this year in endorsements, second to only Peyton Manning among NFL players.

I doubt he would've squeezed the team for extra money. I mean, his contract is still one of the biggest ever and the most upfront guaranteed money ever ($67mil first 3 years). He wants to win and he's making a killing in endorsements alone.

He's very well paid while also having a team friendly deal. Boosting his contract would hurt the team far more than it lines his pockets. Besides, isn't Cam the one that pushed the negotiations along and said to get just it done?

Not being snarky but do you have a source for that amount relative to other players? I'd like to read that article.

I doubt anybody back in the early part of this year would have believed that we'd be going into this season with our two most important players locked up to long term deals.

Hurnia experience is almost over so I can't blame anyone hesitant to believe this.  DG deserves a major award for being best GM hands down this year.

DG and Ron Rivera have transformed the culture here.

Crazy, huh? I remember when we didn't even know who our two most important players were. Now we have two of the most important players in the NFL. My how times have changed.

To be fair, if you give Gettleman credit for great timing on Cam's contract, you gotta knock him for not getting Josh Norman locked up this past offseason before he had a DPOY worthy season.

I love Josh Norman, he is a fantastic player and I've been wanting him to start since last preseason. With that being said, Gettleman offered him 8 Mil a year and he turned it down. It was a very reasonable offer considering Norman only started half of the year.

It would have been a Hurney like move to rush into paying the man top CB money after a half of a season.

And with that being said, pay the man.

I still think Josh Norman got a fair contract offer at the time it was given. Gettledude would have looked like a genius if he signed it. But credit to Josh, he believes in himself and wants to make a great business decision. If Josh leaves us for big money though, I won't blame Gettleman or J No. They both played the best cards they could deal.

    • I wanted him to take over the hornets next year. He's a hard ass and I don't know if that works with 18 year olds that are getting paid. He's a good coach though
    • I mean, dude, come on. There is a huge difference between the two in only one word: explosiveness. https://www.nfl.com/prospects/kc-concepcion/3200434f-4e04-6719-61ea-f84c4a062c16     https://www.nfl.com/prospects/corey-brown/32004252-4f35-6941-7d1f-17d92e3e6054 From what I've read, Concepcion is a very explosive, twitchy, dynamic receiver. His problem has been some drops over his career; some he has to own, others have been questionable throws by the QB.  Greg Cosell said that Concepcion may be the most dynamic receiver in the draft. Steve Smith is generally positive. There have been other, perhaps less known, analysts who are more critical, but even they love everything he does before and after the catch. Concepcion gets open!     Is Concepcion perfect? No. But he does have room for growth. He's much better than a nondescript Philly Brown.
    • Here is what I see (and you can determine what it means):  Seems to be a lot of early-round attention at WR and LB.  At WR, the Z-WR (off ball, lined up on TE side, goes in motion a lot.  Can cause mismatches) seems to be the focus.  We really don't have one with Coker or XL.  I have a feeling that Concepcion or Cooper are high on the board.  This tells me they are going to grab a WR early--probably in round 1. Linebacker is most obviously and certainly the second round pick.  Rodgriquez, Hill, or Golday. The fact that there is no contact with a Center is interesting, but there are guards.  Chase Bisontis is an interesting name that stands out.  Carver Willis is a short-armed OT that could be a swing T, G, or....C.  He is very good at run blocking.  OT?  If we are drafting a T early, they sure are keeping it close to the vest.  Visits do not mean interest--it could mean they want a closer look.  Still, No top OTs, No top Centers--what is going on?  This is going to be interesting. Safety--This is interesting because the talk is that Smiith-Wade might move to FS-but that does not explain why the CBs on this list are unimpressive.  The Safeties they have listed are day 2 players, fwiw, and both were 30 visits. Edge--bottom of the roster guys. If I were to guess, based on this, here is what I would wager:   There would be a high probability of a trade back from 19.  Watch a team moving up for bama QB Simpson. Round 1: WR--Concepcion and Cooper both project to late first rounders.  Both are perfect fits for the Z WR (the WR that is not on the line of scrimmage outside the TE)  We don't have that guy right now.   I think we think the offense opens up with a strong Z WR.  MHS Prediction:  Cooper. Round 2:  LB--Hill, Golday, and Rodriguez are second-rounders.  One of them will be a Panther.  If we trade back, we could move up for a S.  MHS Prediction:  Rodriguez. NOTE: Bisontis (C) and McDonald (DT) are wild cards--if either drop in round 2, we take them and move up back into the second for the LB.  If not, we draft the LB and move back up for Haulsy (S) so we have 4 starting-caliber players on days 1 and 2.   Day 3: TE (Delp is my guess), OT (Travis Burke is my guess), CB, and DT.
