is funchess ready to be the number 1 WR? has our young man grown up?

Recommended Posts

its occured to me that ginn will make a crucial drop in the playoffs. we all know its coming, we're dreading the day were we sit in bank of america stadium on a cold january night with a little poo leaking out of our ass when cam heaves it up on a 3rd and 8 and ginn is running in stride to attempt to catch it. i dont think we cant afford that risk with him being the number 1 WR (aka the first read guy) on the depth chart. so is funchess ready to become the big boy? common sense tells us that we will meet either seattle or cardinals in the playoffs, if not both in back to back weeks. has funchess improved himself enough to take on sherman and peterson? kelvin did respectable against those two last season, but as good as funchess has been lately, he still has some ways to go to even get on KBs level.

Ted Ginn is just setting up his "moment". Not intentionally, of course.

I like to think there's going to be a moment in the playoffs when Cam rockets the ball 50 yards down-field, to a wide open Teddy, the Panthers Nation collectively holds it's breath, and he gloriously makes the catch against all odds and strides into the end zone for a win.

He has become a contributor.  That's a huge step up from dropping everything which is what he was doing earlier this season.  I think we'll see a big jump from him between his rookie season and next season.  A full NFL offseason after getting a taste will do him a world of good.

This year's WR class just goes to show how special last year's class really was.  Outside of Cooper (#4 overall pick) and Diggs (huge 5th round steal), the rest of the class hasn't done much.  Historically speaking, that's not abnormal.  Last year's class will likely prove to be the best WR draft since 1996 (Keyshawn Johnson, Terry Glenn, Marvin Harrison, Eric Moulds, Amani Toomer, Moose, T.O., Joe Horn)

One of the weird things about our offensive success is that we really don't have a number 1 receiver.  If Ginn who is listed as our number 1 has a bad day because he is matched up with a great corner we don't really suffer that much. Because our 2nd, 3rd and 4th receiver are all about equal in ability and Cam spreads the ball around quite a bit.  When Smitty got shut down we struggled to move the ball in the air. Now our best receiver isn't a wide out and a guy at number 4 like Funchess has better hands than our number 1. The ultimate effect is that the whole or gestalt is better than the individual pieces as they all serve roles when they can get favorable match ups. No one is great but together they are effective.  So Funchess doesn't have to be the number 1 receiver to help us down the road. He just needs to catch the ball when his number is called.

The funny thing about Teddy is he has had plenty of great moments. He put us ahead vs. the Patriots in 13' and then had that amazing catch in the rain vs. the Saints to clinch a playoff birth. He makes incredible plays for us and we budget for his errors.

Agree.

I think this is the only bright side of KB going down in preseason. It forced Cam and the rest of the team to grow.

You and p55 both touched on what I also believe to be true. With KB, of course, we have more talent on the field. But his absence has forced both Cam and Shula to be more flexible and adaptable.

The nice thing is once we get KB back, with a now better-developed QB and OC, we will be even more deadly.

funchess needs to be our # 2 over philly and i want to see more of cotchery he really improved this year by having a lower roll

Philly is better at catching and holding on to the ball than either Funchess or Ginn at this point in time.  He just needs to improve his ability to get open.

i feel like funch is more of a threat because of his size esp in the redzone

    • If we were a solid winning organization most of us would have no problems with this selection. We would have had a capable starter in place to allow him to be eased into the rotation. If were told prior to the draft that he had been completely cleared health wise, we "probably" wouldn't have a ton of reservations about this selection. If we had picked this young man on Day 3 of the draft most of us would have no problems with this selection because we wouldn't have had to use draft capital to move up and get him. Unfortunately, none of the above were true 1)  We were a terrible team in 2024 and needed an immediate impact player. 2)  He was hurt near the the end of the 2023 season. We traded up to get him even though we knew he wasn't medically cleared to play in 2024. 3) When training camp started we were hearing stories that the knee wasn't ready. That alone should have raised some red flags. I personally would have red-shirted him in 2024 in order to have him ready for 2025. We had Chubba as our lead back and other guys to fill the #2 and #3 spots on the depth chart. There was no need to rush Brooks unto the field in 2024. Here's our draft history in the 2nd round between 2021 and 2024 2021 TMJ 2022 No draft choice. We picked Matt Corall in round 3 (#94) as our only Day 2 pick. 2023 Jonathan Mingo 2024 Jonathon Brooks. We have taken 4 skill players on Day 2 of the draft for the past 4 years who have contributed absolutely nothing to the offensive side of the football. 3 are no longer on the team. Two of them are no longer in the NFL. One  could possibly never start a game due to a knee injury. This type of poor drafting is why this team has been so bad for the entire decade.
    • Even limited as he was I still don't think they have replaced his production, and not just the sack stats. The games Clowney missed it was very obvious what his value still was. Risky move but whatever. They only had 32 sacks last year and if that drops then it's going to get ugly. I see the improvement in run stopping but not in pass protect in any way.
    • I have zero issues with this.
