is funchess ready to be the number 1 WR? has our young man grown up?

Recommended Posts

Funchess is growing up. He's made some nice plays but he isn't ready for the #1 WR spot. He has yet to play fearless! He goes for the catch as if it won't be contested and if it is, he usually doesn't win. I have rarely seen him use his body or his height to his advantage. He's still growing up...

I dont think he is close yet. However I am really encouraged by his development. We were sold an unrealistic expectation in the offseason but he is likely on track to be a possible starter with Kelvin next season. It depends on which receiver position he settles in to.

KB and Funchess are going to be a deadly pair next season. Funchess has made really nice, steady improvement throughout the season. I think he will continue to progress for the rest of this season, and then we will see a big jump from year 1 to year 2. Getting KB back just changes the entire dynamic of the WR corps. It allows everyone to slide into their natural positions. Ginn gets to play the 3 role, where he will absolutely thrive next year, instead of an ill fitting 1. Funchess will slot nicely as a number 2, and KB will fit into his rightful position as our WR 1. Even with no additions through FA and the draft this passing attack is going to be just deadly going forward...and I'm sure Gettleman will not hesitate to add more weapons for Cam should the right opportunity present itself.

Hot damn the present and future is too fuging bright here in Charlotte!!

While thats true you have to take that with a grain of salt, he started out horrible but the last 4-5 games he has been rock solid when Cam gets him the ball.  I think against the saints he did have a drop but very very much improved over the first 2 games he played.

We have two WRs in the top 5 in drops and we're 12-0. That's some crazy poo right there.

Steve Smith and Benjamin and Demaryus Thomas were 1 - 3  last year. It doesnt mean that much compared to the plays they do make.

You and p55 both touched on what I also believe to be true. With KB, of course, we have more talent on the field. But his absence has forced both Cam and Shula to be more flexible and adaptable.

The nice thing is once we get KB back, with a now better-developed QB and OC, we will be even more deadly.

Agree....in a weird way, having KB injured has actually been a positive in Cam's development as a pocket passer.  He has really improved his ability to go through progressions quickly and spread the ball around.  Will pay huge dividends in the future when KB is back.

Funchess, nor any of the receivers, nor us fans, needs to be concerned with the numerical labeling that comes with being part of a wide receiving corps. What Funchess and the rest of our wide receivers need to do is catch the ball when it comes to them.  They need to know their roles and play their parts. The way that Cam has evolved---understanding what defenses are trying to do on any given play and making his reads---the guys just need to do what they're supposed to do which is consistently run good routes and consistently catch the ball.

Those guys caught a lot more balls than DF has.  That being said, Funchess has gotten better although still not good enough to get more plays than Brown at this point.  Hopefully, he will continue to improve.

Agreed.  This #1 vs #2 thing is overblown imo.  I think we rotate our receivers based on circumstances and number 1,2,3 etc is irrelevant.  And that is not a bad thing.

At this point philly is better than Funchess. He puts on some ridiculous moves on other teams DBs. It's also not fair to blame Ginn when Cam misses guys as well.

Oh, so because the leagues MVP doesn't make every play every time, we cant expect a wide receiver to catch a ball that hits him right between the numbers or hits him perfectly in stride down the field?

At this point Ginn is who he is, but it is still ridiculous to say that you cant blame him for his mistakes just because Cam doesnt have a 100 completion percentage
