The defense only gave up 17 points

I know they blew a bunch of third and longs but still... only 17 points.  That's actually better than average.  They made some key stops too including that Norman recovery and some big sacks.

 

Meanwhile, Atlanta who I believe until today was last in sacks, dominated, DOMINATED our offensive line.  They had been great all year and hopefully today was just an anomaly but let's spare the shots against the defense, please.

Yeah should have ran it a few times on 2nd and short. Why dropping back to throw when fozzy (pre injury) and tolbert were getting chunks is beyond me.

Falcons had 60% 3rd down conversion and we gave up almost 400 yards. Also were bailed out by a missed FG and a gift fumble.

They were easily as bad as the offense.

Falcons were 9-15 on 3rd-down conversions.  "Only gave up 17 points" isn't enough to take Defense out of the conversation.  They were a big reason why we lost today.

Matt Ryan had 7 in completions out of 30 attempts. At one point they allowed Ryan to go for 10 straight completions.

Again, this team is built around the defense.

Our offense is at the point that we cannot afford to lose Ted Ginn Jr.

Let me say that again: our offense is at the point that we need Ted Ginn Jr. or we are screwed.

we played that bitch like a preseason game. ATL played like their super bowl. Oh well.

Points aren't the best measuring stick of a defense. They converted too many third downs and ate up clock. Our defense was god awful. Had Atlanta had more time, they would have scored more points.

The Falcons ran all over us. The defense missed way too many tackles. Thomas Davis was a train wreck today, love TD but no one is beyond reproach, he missed big big tackles. And J No looked lost in the secondary. I think our guys maybe didn't prepare for this game the way they needed to. They came out looking like they were on vacation. Losing Bene hurt quite a bit too. Our secondary is very leaky right now.

You can't just got by total points given up. It works both ways. For example we pin Atlanta inside the 10 several times and if we get one 3 and out it changes field position and helps the offense. They didn't. They did get a turnover and gave the offense good field position only for the offense to not move it and settle for a FG. It works both ways but too many people only see one side of things.

But giving up so many 3rd down conversions keeps our offense off the field and gives us less time to come back. The defense is not blameless in this loss.

You're looking at the wrong thing, the Falcons dominated the game and kept Cam on the sideline.

Yup. Plus they murdered Carolina in time of possession by like 10 minutes.
