Tagging a guy year to year for 2 seasons can make plenty of financial sense.

big elite contracts for highly emotional players without huge consistency of years of great play to their resume.....IS risky business.

I get people love Norman.  We all should for his play this year.  But there is still a difference between him and a Luke Kuechly IMO.

Agree 100%. Being the team pain-in-the-ass cool if you're Steve Smith but right now he's Greg Hardy minus the whole being a scumbag thing. The tag's perfect for him because he'll still get big paydays as long as he keeps being great.

The franchise tag for corners will likely be in excess of 14 million in 2016. He turned down 7 so far. There could be lots of room between the 2 go get a long term deal. We could do a 4 year 50 million contract with 25 guaranteed and it would be a win win and the guaranteed money wouldn't exceed what we would pay if we franchised him for 2 years. Honestly we don't have anyone waiting in the wings if we don't try and keep him

Ok so let's assume we win the Super Bowl. At this stage Bene is out with a broken leg, tilman is done with a torn ACL. We have two guys who were on PS or in retirement behind Norman who at the beginning of the season turned down an offer and bet on himself. Then went out and played like the number 1 corner in the league and help win is a super bowl and you think he gets tagged? No

we either sign him to a long term deal or we are letting him walk to get his money but we aren't tagging him. That is the ultimate disrespect to a player who just accomplished so much. That leads to hold outs and drama something that Gettleman doesn't do.

Its not set in stone he gets the tag so it's funny to me every one gets like it's already happened.

We are going to need to spend money on the DL.  We all know Gettlemen believes overall success starts there....not the back end.

Maybe you tag Norman this year and a deal to retain him changes some vs what it takes now

Tagging a player is not disrespectful at all. He would be one of the 5 highest paid at his position and it would be 14 million guaranteed once he signed it. He made 1.5 million this year. I don't see how a guaranteed 900% raise for one year is anything but high respect for the job he did. They often don't like it because they want a long term deal but it would be a huge raise for him.

of course you don't see how only getting a one year deal after playing your best season is disrespect. Smh Those top five guys he's getting paid like all have long term deals and he wouldn't. high respect?!? Gettleman is shrud but he's not an idiot.

To tag Norman after the year he's had is akin to saying you don't believe in him and don't really value his production in 2015

So all the hold outs related to getting tagged means players love the tag? If you were to poll every player and ask them if they'd rather be tagged or get a longer term deal what do you think their answers would be?

It's actually saying you're about to be on the wrong side of 30 and we can tag you for less than you want. Twice.

Well not really, giving a man 12/14 million upfront pretty much says the opposite.

What it does say though is, we are unsure if you can keep that up for 5/6 years at 14 million a year with 30 million guaranteed. At age 28. Norman wants to be paid like one of the best, that is clear, so that is 6 years 84 mil.... Again, age 28... Go Hurney!!

What use is a tag if someone don't want to be here? How pissed would he be if he was getting offered 60 mil then getting tagged..

That's what I'm thinking. I don't think Norman will like getting tagged considering he probably knows that this will be his only chance at earning the big money. He's going to want a long term contract.

I don't think anyone has suggested letting him walk.

Keeping him on a 1 year rental on the tag then letting him walk (which is what many have suggested) is what I'm talking about. I don't think that would make any sense at all, and I think DG will have learned a lot from the Hardy situation. I don't like the idea of the franchise tag at all in any situation unless it's just to give the team and player more time to negotiate a long term contract. If you don't want the player around long term then don't bother with the tag, in my opinion. But we should want Josh here for another 3 to 4+ years and I hope that's how Gettleman sees it.
