Bruce Irvin

Since he was drafted by the Seahawks in 2012, Bruce Irvin has almost averaged 2 sacks against us.

2012 - 2 sacks, 1 FF

2013 - Didn't play

2014 - 2 sacks

2014 playoffs - 1 sack

2015 - 2 sacks

Comparing his combine profile to Vic Beasley...(Falcons OLB that gave us trouble in our only loss this season)

Irvin - 4.5 40 time, 23 bench press, 6.70 cone drill, 4.03 20 yard shuttle, 33.5 inch vertical jump

Beasley - 4.53 40 time, 35 bench press, 6.91 cone drill, 4.15 20 yard shuttle, 41 inch vertical

Very similar speed, but Beasley is the better overall athlete. But, that speed/pass-rush ability has given us trouble.

Remmers will have enough trouble with Avril, as he had earlier this year during our 27-23 win, so how can we help alleviate this?

I am pretty sure he plays a 4-3 OLB and blitzes gaps rather than the edge most often. I think that helps him rather than just being an edge rusher where it is a little more predictable. He drops in zone often as well. This is our best line we have had so I think we can make the adjustments.

Not a good idea to move a rookie in the starting lineup for the first playoff game....

I can understand that, but Remmers has been pretty bad.  He's going to get our QB killed.   Whenever Cam gets pressured, at least the last couple of months, it's usually Remmers getting beat badly.  So you either get a sack or Remmers gets a hold because he's beat.   I'm not sure it could get worse.

Williams biggest weakness coming out of college was his feet and athleticism. He is not the guy you pick to handle a pure speed rusher like Irvin.

Don't get me wrong....I definitely think Williams is the starting RT (beginning next season).  I just think messing with the chemistry of the OL (with a rookie no less) going into the playoffs would be a VERY risky one to make.  Don't think there is any way the coaching staff makes that move.

Yeah, I don't usually agree with MadHatter but he's right on this one, and it's not even close.

Also, Williams was always a project from the day we drafted him.  It'll be better for him going into next year, unless Remmers allows four sacks all on his own, he'll be starting all game Sunday.

Use more packages that utilize Dickson and Tolbert/Stewart to chip in and support the OL. Seattle loves to blitz and wisely using Olsen and Dickson will be key in hopes that they overpursue, and let Cam work his magic. 12 or 21 packages with Ginn on one side, Cotchery/Funchess/Brown rotating on the other side would be wise. Our OL has been good all year, but Remmers is def the weak link. Williams will be our guy in '16 and beyond, but he has no place starting on this line as we pursue the Lombardi.

    • First off, my memory is faulty and so I should remember you. Anyways, welcome back. Having been around here since 2004/2005, I do have to say all these hot takes are not necessary new. I still very much remember all the constant complaints about Jake Delhomme. How he was too inaccurate, fumbled the ball too often, threw bad interceptions, and how Steve Smith deserved a better QB. How this franchise needed to replace Jake for someone better because he dragged everyone down. We even had names for Jake defenders; Blind Delhomme Jock Sniffers (BDJS). That one thread about Chris Weinke over Jake Delhomme because Weinke threw for 423 Yards but only scoring 13 points remains the worst hot takes I've ever seen around here. So to me, it feels like history repeating itself again and I don't feel like getting that much involved in flame wars like I used to. I am more of a sit back and see what the players/team does type of person. And even then, yes, there are so many moving parts that it's not as easy to pinpoint the core issues, especially when you're not inside the building and know every single detail.  And yes, I think even way back then, I hated how overvalued the QB position was and it hasn't gotten much better. It's to where my philosophy has shifted to where if you can't win a SB with a QB on their rookie contract, you might as well get another one. Otherwise, you have to give that QB so much money that the rest of the roster suffers and your window becomes quite narrow.  That's why I'm skeptical that Mahomes/Burrow/Jackson/Allen will win more than one or two SB's between them. None of them look as invisible as they did a few years ago and that's because their targets are much inferior and/or they are getting more roughed up behind a worse O-line.
    • Haha I was still off was thinking of mac jones he has done extremely well this year with basically no weopons as all the 49ers are hurt except for mcaffrey but he is playing slow this year for some reason.
