Senior Bowl Anybody Watching?

Shawn Oakman will be the best DL from this draft.

I had my doubts as a I bought into the media spin of him being great physically, but having average tape.

After looking at his games over the past few weeks, he is playing within the Baylor system. His discipline, patience, hand play, and awareness are exceptional. He plays more like a stalker than an attacker at the DE position and his snap attack is unreal. Oakman will carry over to the NFL game very well. I believe if you told Oakman to focus on hunting the QB, he would dominate.

This is what bothers me with scouts evaluating college talent for the NFL level. They value the prototypical athlete with text book mechanics. The talent level at the NFL level is close to even. The important factors that separate players at the NFL level are discipline, self efficacy, reaction time, first step quickness, reflex conditioning and cognitive processing speed.

You need to look no further than Kawann Short coming out of Purdue. Short was touted as athletically being a first round talent, but there were knocks on him due to his style of play and build. His frame was out of proportion with thin legs, his play to play effort was questionable, his initial moves can stall and slow him making him a non-factor.

Short took a hit on his scouting report due to the defensive system Purdue played, which is much like the system Baylor plays. They put more emphasis on patience and discipline with their DL than they do aggressively attacking to the ball. Team players who fill their role and trust their teammates typically get downgraded by scouts who are looking for the consistently dominant players.

Shawn Oakman is a player the Panthers need in the DL rotation.

But can we get him at 32nd pick?

    • I'm more impressed with the UDFA that the guys they have drafted in the first the last 2 years. A whole lot of prove it is still needed before any improvement should be talked about seriously.
    • Sure.    ignore that he said this roster wasn’t good in 2023 to 2024 but keep up the effort
    • While I don't believe its a must win, (we have been better on the road this post season) it is definitely A NEED TO WIN the longer this series goes the more pronounced the Canes advantage on rest and health will be! If we hold serve at home in games 1 and 2 guaranteeing a 6 game minimum series for them if we lose the road games..... by the game 4 and 5 I expect them to be beat they have played A LOT OF HOCKEY the last three years, they have MINIMAL rest off a more physical than one might have expected series vs the leafs.... you know Tampa took their pound of flesh in round 1 from them. Combine all that with the fact that even though this year's canes squad isn't as talented as last years this IS a better squad than the one they swept last time that had McKenzie Mckeathern on line 1 Turbo with a broken hand a banged uo and eventually concussed Slavin (and even though it was a sweep 6 OTS and 4 1 goal losses is hardly dominant)  This year Bob hasn't been superman (hes probably gonna still have a great save percentage agiast us just a side effect of our style) Thatchuk is maybe 50% (3 game winners agiast us) their defense no longer has Gudas and several other downgrades.  While the Canes have a healthy and performing Svechnikov along with other big guys to counteract florida like Carrier, Jankowski, Robinson.   I by know means think it will happen but I either see this as a low scoring dog fight or a series were the canes surprise and end up dominating.
