Be Honest, How Many of You Were Cam Fans When He Was At Auburn?

I myself was pulling for Luck, but was intrigued by Cam Newton.  I honestly felt about as good about a consolation prize as you could.

When he was at Auburn I remember all of his cut back scrambles while Auburn was pulling out the tough SEC matchups and I watched the Natty, but I never thought he would be this good.  To be honest when he started his first game at Arizona I was expecting a stat line similar to his preseason games, 150 with a TD.

How did everyone else feel about Cam BEFORE he became our guy?

I didn't follow college football closely. I didn't really form an opinion of him. Until the Iron Bowl. I really enjoyed watching that game and it was Cam that made it worth watching. After that I was routing for them in the Championship vs. Oregon even though I liked several of the Oregon players.

To be honest I was very ignorant of Cam as a player and person before and during the draft process. It's people like me that can be swayed by the media speculation. When "experts" are slotting him to go around pick 22 or even the 2nd round it made me skeptical taking him 1st overall. But the Panthers did their homework and made a good pick.

i don't give a damn about college, so i don't follow it and didn't have an opinion.

i was hesitant to draft him because of everything i heard from scouts. i thought the safest route was to grab dareus, build the trenches, and try to find a guy in free agency.

luckily i'm more of a dumbass than the panthers FO and scout team

he was always a boom or bust guy for me in auburn. it wasnt the malzahn spread offense or the laptop shenanigans that concerned me, it was the grand total of 1 year experience in big time college football.

i didnt want to take the risk on him and instead build in the trenches with dareus or fairly or just draft aj green and roll with matt moore, lmao

Pretty cool story. Im from Jacksonville NC. Born and raised. If you know anything about Jacksonville we are attached to Camp Lejeune marine corp base. I cant stand this town. I decided to go off to school to Chattanooga TN in 2001. In 2004, I heard hype about a HS guy in Atlanta at westlake. Chattanooga is only 2 hrs from atlanta. So I went to see his HS game at westlake. Ive been following him ever since. Through his ups and downs. I thought he would be a bust after FL. Because usually alot of stars never go nowhere because of mistakes and some of the best players never get a shot because of dumb decisions. But when he showed back up at Auburn, he put on a show. Dude revived his career and rededicated his life to being better than ever. Ive always been a die hard panthers fan. Been there from Kevin Greene, Kerry Collins, Sam Mills, Rae Curruth incident, Jake delhomme inserted in the middle of the season and somehow taking us to the super bowl. The 2003 failure of Jake at Arizona. the Jimmy Clausen era (Pickles, matter of fact someone check out his wife, she is bad, dont know how he got that). And what you know the player Ive been watching since HS lands on my favorite team. Ive always liked Cam. Through his life, he deserves this moment. He has overcomed alot along with TD, GREG, OHER and others. We got a team more than warriors, these guys have overcome alot and they deserve every bit of this.

I never thought he would be a bust, because he's a physical freak and even the scouts that had their reservations still noted that he had an incredible work ethic, so even before we drafted him I thought the Jamarcus Russell comparisons were just lazy journalism and just idiots comparing them because theyre both 6'6 and black.

I never expected him to be literally the Lebron of the NFL though. Which i think doesnt even do Cam justice because Lebron tends to be passive and scared of the big and clutch moments while Cam embraces them and even elevates his game in them. To be honest I thought his ceiling was Donovan McNabb and I was actually pretty excited about that.

    • Someone correct me- doesn't Dave have a six year contract??? I think Dan Morgan does as well..... that's the price you have to pay once you get a rep for firing HCs....
    • Brother re-check that guarantee...my page shows 30mill.....thats means he's staying in my book for at least til the end of 2026.  Im going to be my normal honest self, besides watching like half of the SB, I didn't know the guy. My guess is Panthers have a "planned model of paying players" and they almost had to spend a chunk of space on a DLman after Dbrown injury season gave them a nightmare out-come of worst D in NFL scoring. Once Milton got above Dbrown payments, they went with the plan B. A player whom the "co-GM" put his name with. Brad said turk would not be a problem off-field and leader, which the Panthers need badly. I dug in with the google-fu, I found out  I also found him playing lots of NT, which was shocking given the small frame. He seems ready for a bigger role and had a great SB too. IDK, I feel Dan Morgan was dead set on not going into this season without more DL depth and its there. The real deal is this, nearly all FA take one year to "adjust". I think turk is trying too hard and causing injuries as a result for his contract. Dbrown called turk "strong as hell" and I know for a fact Dbrowns has insane core and strength numbers. They lift together with the 50 LB difference...... you always lift with a guy who's similar in strength cause you can leave on the 8 wheels, let the other guy lift while you rest and go after him.  I do wish he had a better beginning to his panther career, 3 games for him to do so and it would cover up the low points if he made a few plays.... Again it felt like they almost had to make move/spend $$$ and Morgan was going to have DL depth this season no matter what...My best guess.
