Cam Newton disappointed me

Being from northern Cali we don't get the chances y'all do to run into your favorite panther players, especially a few days before the biggest game in our history. Kids love cam, mainly cuz their dad loves cam, just hated to see the disappointment on their faces, if I was just there, I would've just ordered my food and ate and moved on. But the kids was excited and it hurts to say I allowed them to let down

Did you say as much? Did you go up and say hey we are from Cali and are big fans? You sent your kids in or did you go in? Maybe instead of sending the kiddos in first you should gone up and when that guy said no photos you could countered and said as much. Thinking sending the kids in first would get his attention when they couldn't say these things isn't very smart. I get it though in the moment you thought they'd make more hay than you. But if you really wanted to be treated differently you gotta say it. He had no idea you live there and your kids never get to see him he's not reading your mind.

I understand that, but it's hard telling your young kids that, especially how much they see me praise Newton every Sunday for the last 5 years,

Your kids were crying because you decided to use them as props to get Cam's attention and they were probably embarrassed. Next time why don't you have the guts to approach him?

Too often parents mkae their kids do things they're afraid of to get more positive responses.

I have been in this situation. Was playing a gig at wild wing south Charlotte one night a couple years ago and my wife made it out. Well she looks over and standing at a table talking to some guys was Deangelo Williams in a hoodie. She starts freaking out like she wants to go talk to him and I told her no. I noticed he is wearing his hood over his head and looking down so nobody will see his face. Probably means he doesn't want to be bothered. I told her to let it go. She kicks herself still but I think she understands what I was saying. Hell, on another note, I was in an elevator with Ron Rivera the day they made the decision on Smitty's release and didn't say a word until the entertainment director introduced me to him. I just KNEW he wasn't having a good day. But once we were introduced I shook his hand said "nice to meet ya" and walked out of the building. I'm sure he appreciated that. These guys are human man. I'm sure Cam was trying to avoid being mobbed. Wouldn't take it personal.

Think about whatever it is you do for a living, do you ever get tired of people expecting you spend part of your off-time doing it for them on the side?  I work in the IT field and I sometimes wouldn't mind having a handler be an a-hole on my behalf for all the neighbors, friends, relatives, etc, who are always wanting me to bring my work home for them.  It must be a million times worse for somebody high profile like him.

This. This. This. This. THIS.

I've always said it's a good thing I'm not famous because I have zero tolerance for people and would probably be the biggest asshole you can imagine if I had to deal with constantly being asked for autographs/photos while in public.

The OP's story sounds bad, I admit, but I imagine it's very awkward for Cam as well. He's been poked and prodded every which way these last two weeks and was probably just out trying to blow off some steam. He certainly seemed rather peeved at today's press conference I noticed.

This 'cult of personality' stuff is absurd. Just tell your kids there is Cam and a few Panther players and leave it at that. Everyone has a right to their privacy and that should be respected. If he wanted to interact that evening he wouldn't be wearing a hoodie and trying to cover up.

Obvious that they just wanted to enjoy the town without being interrupted every five minutes.  Teaching kids about 'personal space' and when it is appropriate to approach someone is a valuable lesson.

    • When I say "average NFL WR", for me, that's comparing him to all WRs in the league during that season/span of time.  He was of course better than those #4-6 WR's that can't even get on the field, but talent/ability wise, he probably wasn't any better than a #3 WR for most NFL teams, he just happened to be on one of the teams in 2019 with even worse WR's so he put up solid stats for the season. Here's more or less how I'm looking at it. Take T-Mac right now and Chark at his best, put them on every NFL team at this very moment, and where would they fall on the depth chart come Week 1 (basically, the teams that don't put the rookies at #1 to "make them earn it in camp" don't count, it's projecting week 1 depth charts). T-Mac would be at worst the #2 WR on the majority of teams this season, (hell, he's likely our #1 at this very moment right now already), peak Chark would not.  Yes, T-Mac still has to prove himself at this level, but his current ability, even as a rookie who hasn't played a snap yet, would have him above Chark on any team's week 1 depth chart. Because again, you can't just fall back on "well Chark had a 1,000 yard season" and use that as the reason for having him above T-Mac.  As he didn't have that 1k yards because he was a beast, it was because he was the only halfway decent receiving option on a bad team that was always losing and passing the ball (the Jags had the 7th worst scoring differential that season).
    • We clearly need to add a veteran stopgap at safety one way or the other.
    • On Panther's Wire too. No idea, just found it and trying to share. https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/panthers/2025/06/15/nfl-free-agency-rumors-panthers-eagles-justin-simmons/84219881007/
